Manchester City vs. QPR: Twitter Erupts to City's Epic Comeback to Win EPL Title

Timothy RappMay 13, 2012

It was an ending for the ages.

Trailing 2-1 to QPR in stoppage time and needing a win to earn the Premier League title over Manchester United, Manchester City did the unthinkable: They scored two goals in five minutes to become league champions in amazing fashion.

Not surprisingly, Twitter was instantly flooded with tweets of amazement, joy and sheer disbelief. Let's take a look at some of the more memorable tweets from one of the most incredible Survival Sundays in league history.

We start with Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl, who gives us a quick and easy recap of the day's results.

"

Stunning day in every way. Man City wins Premier League at the death at Man United's expense. Bolton down, Arsenal 3rd, Spurs 4th.

— Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) May 13, 2012"

Bleacher Report's Dan Levy doesn't remember ever seeing a finish quite like this one.

"

The most amazing thing I can remember. What an EPLict finish.

— Dan Levy (@DanLevyThinks) May 13, 2012"

Bill Simmons puts into perspective the legendary aspect of the broadcast for ESPN. And, you know, just how awesome the game and finish was in general.

"

Whoooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Has to be one of the 5 most dramatic games ESPN has ever shown. You gotta love sports.

— Bill Simmons (@sportsguy33) May 13, 2012"

The Big Lead's Tyler Duffy notes that this game will do wonders for the Premier League's popularity in America. Perhaps at the expense of that little soccer league we already have.

"

EPL made a lot of fans in USA today. MLS wonderingwhat happened.

— Tyler Duffy (@tyduffy) May 13, 2012"

Ex-SportsCenter anchor and current host of Good Morning America, Josh Elliott, reminds America that Sunday's result is just another reason why we should care about soccer.

"

If only for one day, THAT is what all the fuss is about.... #EPL #footballglobaledition

— Josh Elliott (@JoshElliottABC) May 13, 2012"

ESPN's AJ Mass gives a shout-out to QPR's fine effort, understandably lost in the madness of Man City's finish. Also lost in the hoopla—how devastating this day must have been for Manchester United fans, who were five minutes of stoppage time away from a Premier League title.

"

Lost in all the hoopla... how bout a shout out to the QPR side for 100 percent effort, Barton excepted of course.

— AJ Mass (@AJMass) May 13, 2012"

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News provided a fun fact about the mercurial Mario Balotelli, who had an assist on the game-winning goal by Sergio Aguero.

"

I tried telling you something crazy would happen with Balotelli. By the way, rapper Rick Ross' favorite footballer? Mario Balotelli. Oh yes

— Frank Isola (@FisolaNYDN) May 13, 2012"

Saturday Night Live's Seth Myers is a little bit off on his math—86 > 44, after all—but the sentiment remains true nonetheless. There's nothing like ending years of heartbreak.

"

And with that, Man City = 2004 Red Sox

— Seth Meyers (@sethmeyers21) May 13, 2012"

ESPN's Trey Wingo reminds us that sports will always be better than the Kardashians, American Idol or people "stranded" on an island.

"

The Manchester City game today proves once again, Sports is the ultimate reality television show..

— trey wingo (@wingoz) May 13, 2012"

And finally, ESPN's Chris Fowler notes that Man City didn't just win an EPL title, they avoided what was looking like one of the biggest chokes we've ever seen.

"

Just an astounding finish to EPL season.ManCity escapes an all time choke with an all time rally. 2goals in stoppage time for the title.

— Chris Fowler (@cbfowler) May 13, 2012"

It's hard to imagine we'll see a more compelling finish to a season than this one in a very long time. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like two goals in stoppage time to win a league championship.

Sure, our tendency as fans is to declare anything that has just happened as one of the greatest things ever, historical context be damned.

But make no mistake about it—years from now, they'll still be talking about this as arguably the greatest finish to a Premier League season ever.

And perhaps the rest of us will simply remember it as one of, if not the best finishes we've ever seen.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets never give up in stoppage time.
