FC Bayern Munich: A Look Back at the Disastrous German Cup Final

Samrin HasibMay 12, 2012

I started writing at about the hour mark of the final, when the score was 4-1.

Gomez just ended up in the back of the net with the ball somewhere behind him. It will be rather amazing if Bayern is crowned European champion next week. After all, not too many European champions are at the receiving end of 4-1 hidings on a neutral ground. How Bayern will even get back up following this defeat in a week is beyond me.

First of all, let's start with this: There was no luck involved. Dortmund deserved this. Their wins in the league campaign were lucky. This was no lucky victory.

Bayern now needs to look no further than Leverkusen to realize that they could end up without a trophy this season. This defeat was reminiscent of a loss to Leverkusen in the cup in 2009. Bayern lost that game 4-2.

Bayern's attack didn't play too badly. They dominated the first 40 minutes and could have taken the lead. After Mats Hummels scored from the spot, it all started to fall apart. Bayern continued to press forward and was caught out by counter-attacks. Chelsea has a trophy to their name already. They could very well own another one next week.

Unfortunately, Herr Franck has just interrupted me. He scored a wonderful goal to bring a small smile to my face, which disappeared pretty fast considering the score-line. 4-2 is still not a respectable score. The defence was awful, to put it as simply as possible. Holger Badstuber and Jerome Boateng—especially Badstuber—had a pretty horrible game.

I know Manuel Neuer is human, but he did guess right for the penalty but couldn't keep it out. Okay, one has to give Mats Hummels credit for the power behind the shot. Neuer could have done more on the third goal as well.

David Alaba had a pretty poor game by anybody's standards. He is young after all, and it is understandable. And before I can even finish typing, Dortmund has added a fifth. Now, we are at 5-2.

In front of a capacity crowd with the likes of German chancellor Angela Merkel, the coach of the national side Joachim Loew and Sir Alex Ferguson, Bayern put up an embarrassing display. If Jupp Heynckes played Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, Diego Contento and Thomas Mueller from the get-go, I don't think the match could be any worse.

Now this defeat reminds me of another poor Bayern display under Klinsmann. This was against Bremen. Bayern lost 5-2. I believe Marko Marin played exceptionally well that day. This time around, Dortmund did not need any exceptional players out there. This was all fantastically worked-out tactics. I bet Roberto Di Matteo is on the phone to Juergen Klopp right now.

So, finally, I am sorry to all the Dortmund fans out there. I don't have the heart to congratulate all of you on your first double. For Bayern fans, next week could turn out to be a horror story. This defeat will take some time to settle in. Until then, I bid you adieu.
