This Week in WWE: The 7 Things We Learned

Kaleb KelchnerJun 7, 2018

It has been another eventful week in WWE, and as the work week comes to a close, we've rounded up a slideshow to aid you through your Friday!

"This Week in WWE" is a regular feature that rounds up the things we learned this week, from the good and bad all the way to shocking and just plain strange.

On WWE television, Brock Lesnar "quit" the WWE in a letter delivered by an unlikely messenger. CM Punk clashed with his old foe John Laurinaitis before being squashed by Lord Tensai and Daniel Bryan in a handicap match.

This was a big week for WWE off screen, particularly the shocking news hit that one of WWE's top stars was filing for divorce.

We'll cover these topics and more in the following slides!

Sound off in the comment section with your thoughts on the developments this week and which stood out most to you.

Layla Isn't a Placeholder for Kharma

1 of 7

The WWE Universe was caught off guard when Layla made her return at Extreme Rules and defeated Nikki Bella for the Divas Championship.

Many believed it would be Kharma stepping in as a surprise opponent, and when Layla arrived, it felt like a typical Vince McMahon attempt to swerve the Internet.

It's been two weeks now, and Layla has been booked very strong, pinning Maxine on Raw this week with ease.

It's clear that Layla isn't just here to hold us over until Kharma's arrival.

Kofi Kingston and R-Truth May Have a Feud on Their Hands

2 of 7

WWE announced on WWE.com that Kofi Kingston and R-Truth would defend their Tag Team Championship against Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger at Over the Limit.

This news came on the heels of Dolph Ziggler beating Kofi Kingston on Raw, and hopefully, this means we'll see a real tag team feud over the titles.

It feels like it's been ages since the tag team division had an even somewhat relevant feud, so here's to hoping.

Daniel Bryan Is in John Laurinaitis' Pocket

3 of 7

On Raw, CM Punk had his hands full with Lord Tensai in the main event. As the match was set to begin, John Laurinaitis interrupted with some bad news for the WWE Champion.

Johnny Ace made it a handicap match, and Punk not only had to face Tensai, but Daniel Bryan as well.

Although it's obvious that all heels will make nice with Laurinaitis, we had yet to see him get hands on with the CM Punk/Daniel Bryan feud. Now that it's confirmed, expect more shenanigans from Bryan and Johnny Ace to throw a wrench into any and all of CM Punk's plans.

Brock Lesnar Isn't the Only Fighter with Eyes on Pro Wrestling

4 of 7

Brock Lesnar was the only world class mixed martial artist participating in professional wrestling, and his shoot style went over well with fans when he returned to the ring to face John Cena.

That was before Spike TV dropped some bombshell news yesterday in a press release. One of the top mixed martial artists on the planet has signed a joint deal with Impact Wrestling and Bellator Fighting Championships.

"King Mo" Lawal is the former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion, an NCAA Division I All-American and has a passion for both mixed martial arts and professional wrestling.

How TNA and Bellator will handle his schedule, and the various injuries that are hard to avoid in both professions, remains to be seen.

If more mixed martial artists continue to eyeball professional wrestling, the entire landscape of the WWE could change. As an avid fan of both sports, I'd welcome the change of scenery.

As for King Mo's future, I don't doubt that the WWE will be watching his progression in TNA.

Paul Heyman Has Returned to WWE

5 of 7

When WWE announcers said that Brock Lesnar's legal adviser was on his way to the ring, and Paul Heyman came to the ring with a strut that rivaled Vince McMahon's, the internet exploded.

The arena, however, did not. Save for a small ECW chant, the crowd was confused as to why Brock Lesnar's music was playing for some suit.

After Brock Lesnar's abysmal contract promo with John Laurinaitis prior to Extreme Rules, many fans wanted Paul Heyman to return and manage him once again. It appears that WWE brass agreed.

Heyman cut a great promo and delivered Brock Lesnar's message to the WWE.

What was that message? We'll discuss that in the next slide.

Brock Lesnar Won't Be on WWE TV for a While

6 of 7

Brock Lesnar's message to the WWE was that he was "quitting" the company, feeling slighted by Triple H and the company for throwing his updated contract out the window.

Of course, we know Brock isn't quitting anything, despite WWE's admirable attempts to lead us to believe so.

Brock won't be on WWE television for a while, how long exactly is anyone's guess. With Paul Heyman around again, it's a safe bet to presume that Heyman will be filling in for Lesnar on dates with the company.

They've made it clear that Heyman is to be Lesnar's emissary—his words to be taken as though they're from the big man himself.

John Cena Files for Divorce

7 of 7

The WWE Universe was stunned to learn that WWE's No. 1 baby face was filing for divorce when The Miami Herald broke the news.

Divorce is a sad topic, and one that I'm almost certain the WWE won't touch in regards to anything on screen.

This leaves one very big question to be asked.

Will John Cena take some time off?

His injury and match against John Laurinaitis at Over the Limit in a few weeks certainly leaves the door open for Cena to take at least a month or two off.
