Why Dallas Cowboys Are Wise Not to Trade Michael Jenkins

Chris TrapassoJun 3, 2018

You can never have too many quality cornerbacks.

That's become NFL's newest catchphrase due to the increase of pass-happy, spread offenses featuring four and five-receiver sets popping up across the league.

After allowing a disappointing 244 yards through the air per game in 2011, the last thing the Dallas Cowboys should do is let go of cornerback Mike Jenkins.

After attempting but ultimately being unable to trade him during the draft, based on a tweet from ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins, owner Jerry Jones says the Cowboys will not trade Jenkins and that he's in the team's long-term plans.

A smart decision.

Jenkins has been a relative disappointment in Dallas, but he's far from a major liability in the club's secondary and has had his moments where he's looked like a fine cornerback.

With Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne now anchoring the team's secondary, there won't be nearly as much pressure on Jenkins and the presence of those two will help to improve his play.

Orlando Scandrick is the team's other nickel corner, and he too should make strides in 2012 with better outside cornerbacks on the roster.

At this point, the Cowboys would only receive a draft selection as compensation for Jenkins, something that can't help them as they enter another "win-now" season in pressure-packed Big D.
