NBA Playoffs 2012: Analyzing Top Matchups in Thursday's Showdowns

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

It's getting down to the wire in the first round of the 2012 NBA Playoffs. While several teams have advanced, there are still some fantastic elimination games that await us on Thursday.

Whoever you are rooting for, keep an eye on these matchups on Thursday. They may determine who comes away victorious.

Carlos Boozer vs. Elton Brand

Carlos Boozer turned the tables on Elton Brand at a critical time in Game 5. Minus Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, the Bulls needed someone to step up in an elimination game. Boozer, who has seen his fair share of criticism throughout the season, exploded on Tuesday.

He posted 19 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and a block opposite Brand, while Brand finished with a disappointing five points and seven rebounds. The Bulls still have a shot at winning this series. How ironic would it be if Boozer were a key player in their comeback?

Al Horford vs. Kevin Garnett

Kevin Garnett has been fantastic down the stretch for the Celtics. The only problem is, Al Horford is back from injury and played All-Star basketball in Game 5.

Horford posted 19 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals against the Celtics on Tuesday, and he's reminding people why he's been selected for the All-Star Game twice. Garnett's numbers have gone down since Horford entered the picture in Game 4. Horford has the ability to catapult the Hawks past the Celtics, but it's not going to be easy, especially in Boston.

Andrew Bynum vs. JaVale McGee

Despite all the flack that JaVale McGee gets for boneheaded plays from time to time, he racked up 21 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks in Game 5 while shooting 9-of-12 from the field. He was a key component for the Nuggets as they extended the series on Tuesday, and he's making the midseason trade of Nene Hilario look much better.

Of course, McGee will be matched up with Andrew Bynum coming off the bench on Thursday. Bynum needs more shots, it's that simple. He's averaging 18.0 points in the postseason while shooting 60 percent from the floor. He posted 16 points despite getting just eight shots in Game 5, and that's not to mention his 11 rebounds. It may come down to who wants it more on Thursday.
