WWE Smackdown Review: 5 Things We Learned from Tonight's Episode (May 11)

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

I think I just officially witnessed the most jam-packed episode of Friday Night SmackDown in history.

We just watched 10 matches in a two-hour period, and with all of the other segments and shenanigans in between, I feel like my mind is still racing to try to process everything.

This SmackDown was match after match and proof that the WWE is trying to fit in everything it can between now and the upcoming Over the Limit pay-per-view.

That was just one of the many things that tonight's show taught us, though.

Here are five things we learned from the May 11th episode of Friday Night SmackDown.

5. The Tag Team Title Feud Doesn't Make a Ton of Sense

1 of 5

I definitely don't mind seeing Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger getting a WWE Tag Team Championship feud with Kofi Kingston and R-Truth.

I'm just not sure it makes sense.

So far, Ziggler has beaten Kingston in singles action, and Truth has beaten Swagger one-on-one as well. So, does that make Ziggler and Swagger worthy of a title shot?

Not really.

I'm sure their Over the Limit match will be good, but winning one singles match shouldn't give Ziggler and Swagger the right to jump over Epico and Primo and get an opportunity at the tag titles before the former champs do.

Perhaps Epico and Primo will be added to this match at some point. Who knows.

But for now, I don't like the lack of continuity in the tag team title storyline. Hey, at least we're getting tag team wrestling for a change, though!

4. AJ's Heel Turn Is Just About Complete

2 of 5

The Divas on SmackDown are feeling the wrath of AJ.

First, it was Natalya, and then it was Kaitlyn, not once or twice, but three times.

The once sweet and innocent AJ has slowly lost control of her emotions over the last several weeks, and I think it's safe to say that her heel turn is damn near officially complete.

Much like her former boyfriend Daniel Bryan, AJ has begun taking out her aggressions on former friends, and I don't think we can consider her a baby face anymore.

She's officially a heel, and it's a nice change for the Divas division.

The WWE desperately needs a new heel Diva, and it looks like AJ is going to step right into that role as a little woman with a big mean streak.

3. John Laurinaitis Is Going to Target the WWE's Top Baby Faces

3 of 5

As recently as last week, it looked like John Laurinaitis was just going to make life miserable for John Cena.

But it now appears as if the Raw and SmackDown GM plans on targeting as many of the WWE's top baby faces as possible.

Laurinaitis booked CM Punk in a two-on-one handicap match on this week's Raw, and tonight, he pulled a "Screwjob" of sorts that cost Big Show his match against Daniel Bryan.

This is an interesting new addition to Laurinaitis' already developing heel character.

While I thought he was going to be headed for a feud with Cena, it seems like he's actually headed for a feud with Show, Cena, Punk and any other other top face.

Well, maybe not a full-fledged feud. But he's definitely trying to screw them over and put them in situations where they're at a clear disadvantage.

I'm intrigued to see where this goes and if it results in the WWE's top baby faces all uniting to take down Laurinaitis and his heel buddies.

2. Sheamus vs. Jericho and Del Rio vs. Orton Are Likely Upcoming Feud

4 of 5

When the World Heavyweight Championship match at Over the Limit was made into a Fatal 4-Way on Monday's Raw, my initial thought was that this was being done to set up a couple of singles feuds in the future.

Judging by what we saw on tonight's SmackDown, I think my thoughts were confirmed.

It looks like the WWE is starting the initial phases of individual feuds with the four World Heavyweight title competitors, likely building toward a Sheamus vs. Chris Jericho feud as well as a Randy Orton vs. Alberto Del Rio feud.

These are both fresh new rivalry possibilities that we've never seen before, and I like it.

We are likely going to get two potentially great feuds, and even if it winds up being Jericho vs. Orton (while the Del Rio vs. Sheamus one gets extended), I'm OK with that, too.

1. The End of the Brand Split Might Be Necessary

5 of 5

I've been a firm believer that the WWE's brand split is necessary, mostly because of the house show circuit, but also because I like that Raw is a supershow while SmackDown isn't.

But especially in recent weeks, I think that the WWE has proven that the end of the brand split might be necessary. In fact, it might as well just happen.

We've got Chris Jericho feuding for SmackDown's World title along with a star who inexplicably moved to SmackDown (Alberto Del Rio), while Daniel Bryan is the No. 1 contender for Raw's WWE Championship.

Doesn't make much sense, does it?

The WWE continues to ignore the brand extension, and for the sake of storyline continuity and my sanity, I wish they would just announce the end of it already.

It means less now than ever. It might as well go bye-bye.
