College Football Recruiting 2013: Power Ranking the Top 10 California Recruits
We've ranked the best 10 prospects from Texas on Sunday and Tuesday we looked at the top 10 players in Florida. It's only one thing left to do after that, right?
Correct, as now we head to California to rank the 10 best prospects from the Golden State. California is one the three main super hot beds for college football recruiting and churns out players seemingly every hour.
Here are the top 10 for 2013.
10. Chris Hawkins, CB
1 of 10A 6'0", 170 pound corner, Hawkins has excellent length and athleticism. He won't wow you with elite strength in his press and jams, but he still doesn't back down from the physical aspects of the game.
Hawkins is very instinctive, has a good feel for routes, can turn and run with ease, close in a flash and has the athleticism to challenge for balls in flight.
He's committed to USC.
9. Steven Mitchell, WR
2 of 10Perhaps a little underrated, Mitchell is the prototypical slot WR. He's more quick than he is fast, stands 5'11" 175 pounds and is a play maker around the seams.
He shows a good burst off the line, can avoid linebackers on the move in his routes, get separation form his man and make the catch then torch a defense with elusiveness as a YAC player.
USC and Oregon interest him the most out of a good amount of other offers.
8. Johnny Johnson, CB
3 of 10Johnson isn't the biggest corner in the world at just barely 5'9", but this guy plays physical and big. I saw him at a combine last year and he was the best CB at the event.
He's strong in his press, has some transition quickness and will support in the run game. Johnson will battle deep and stay on his man's hip until the whistle.
7. Tahaan Goodman, S
4 of 10Imagine being a high school WR and seeing Chris Hawkins out at CB and then looking over and seeing a 6'2", 190 pound Tahaan Goodman at safety.
Well that's what you would see if you played Rancho Cucamonga High School in California. Goodman is a physical safety prospect that can play FS with range and speed or SS with physicality and hitting ability.
He's got a ton of offers from many elite programs.
6. Dareel Daniels, WR
5 of 10Daniels is a 6'3", 210 pound WR that has a trait that I really like in receiver prospects, as he can burst for balls in flight.
I'm not saying this guy is Randy Moss, but it's a trait that really separated Moss from other WR's in his prime (and cornerbacks on the field too).
Daniels' size is impressive and imposing, but he knows how to use it in showing great body control. He can combat press coverage with strength and has length to make his strike zone very large.
5. Max Redfield, S
6 of 10A classic FS prospect, Redfield is a super athletic 6'2", 195-pounder from Mission Viejo High School. He's big, long and rangy for his size and plays with great speed.
Redfield is at best when he is given a deep third or back half of the field; he can backpedal while reading the QB and WR's routes so he can instinctively burst to jump a passing lane and make an interception.
4. Eddie Vanderdoes, DT
7 of 10Pound for pound, Vanderdoes may be one of the strongest prospects in the country. He's a 6'4", 295 pound DL prospect from Placer, California that has good skills for the spot.
Vanderdoes can quickly read blocking schemes, drop his anchor vs. double teams, stall a running game and is goo at creating havoc in the middle of the defense. He's not a speed rusher vs. the pass, but he can push the pocket in the middle to pressure the passer.
Recruiting is till pretty open and fluid for Vanderdoes.
3. Justin Davis, RB
8 of 10Davis is the best pure RB prospect in the state and hails from Stockton, California. A 6'0', 200-pounder with good size and willingness to run inside, Davis has perimeter traits too.
He can jump cut and skate to the edges of the box, turn his shoulders to the goal post, and elude fenders on his way to the end zone with good speed.
2. Michael Hutchings, OLB/SS
9 of 10Some schools could see Hutchings as more of a strong safety prospect, while others could see the 6'1", 210-pounder as a future OLB.
He's an instinctive linebacker right now for De La Salle in Northern California, yet has the athleticism to make the transition to a Rover-strong safety role in college. Hutch' has great range and can be a factor versus the pass well as well.
His top includes: USC, Washington, Miami, Notre Dame and Washington.
1. Su'a Cravens, DB/OLB
10 of 10Cravens is a versatile football player and can play anywhere on the field ranging from FS, SS, OLB, RB or even WR. He goes in the 6'1", 205 pound range and is a great athlete.
Cravens has incredible awareness on the field, instincts and easy athleticism. He shows good agility, quick feet and is a play maker with the ball. He's the top recruit in California this year, as the Murrieta native is an excellent all around football player.
He has a final of: USC, UCLA, Michigan, Ohio State and Nebraska. He'll announce on June 6th.
