SEC Football Weekly Recruiting Roundup: Connor Mitch Commits to South Carolina
Every Wednesday here at The SEC Blog, we will update you on the latest commits, decommits and rumors in the recruiting world.
Commits
South Carolina got big news on Tuesday when Connor Mitch, a 6'3", 220-pound quarterback from Raleigh, N.C., committed to the Gamecocks over offers from Alabama, Auburn and LSU. Mitch is rated as a 4-star prospect and the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the nation according to 247Sports.com. Mitch may not start right away, but he's got the talent and the stage to be a star at South Carolina.
Tennessee dipped into the junior college ranks to get the commitment of De'Vondre Campbell. At 6'5", 215, Campbell needs to beef up to fill out that tall frame, but he's got a ton of talent and will be a nice addition to the Volunteer roster.
Across the state in Nashville, Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin kept his recruiting momentum going with the commitment of 3-star wide receiver Latevius Rayford. Rayford has 4.5 speed and has tremendous leaping ability. The 6'1", 180-pound Memphis-native joins a 2013 Vanderbilt class that already has eight commitments.
Hugh Freeze's Ole Miss Rebels got two commitments this week, headlined by Mario Mathis. Mathis is a 6'1", 220-pound outside linebacker from Thomasville, Ga. Mathis is rated as a 3-star prospect by 247Sports.com, and has the athleticism to make an early impact for the Rebel defense.
The Rebels also went the junior college route to get the commitment of Quadarius Mireles. Mireles is a native of Delray Beach, Fla., and currently attends East Mississippi Community College. He's a 5'11", 185 speedster that fits in nicely to Freeze's spread attack.
SEC newcomer Missouri got into the commitment mix this week with the pledge of offensive tackle Clay Rhodes. At 6'6", 250, Rhodes has the body to be a star in the SEC. Missouri likes wide splits from its offensive lineman, and Rhodes has the athleticism to shine in head coach Gary Pinkel's offense.
News and Rumors
Robert Nkemdiche, the nation's No. 1 overall prospect, delayed his college announcement until sometime closer to National Signing Day. Nkemdiche is doing the right thing by not committing until he's ready.
Auburn defensive back Josh Holsey signed with the Tigers last February. According to Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it appears that he could have been bound for Georgia if the Bulldogs had extended an offer.
