What They're Saying
Mark Medina of The Los Angeles Times believes that the Lakers have nothing to worry about with Kobe Bryant on the team. Even when the rest of the team played disgustingly sloppy and poor, Kobe willed L.A. back into it and actually put the Lakers in position to tie it at the end.
"Everything about the Lakers' effort looked ugly. They couldn't hit shots. They didn't get back on defense. They hardly looked interested in closing out the series.
Thankfully, the Lakers have Bryant, who scored 43 points on 14-of-32 shooting. Bryant quickly cut Denver's 12-point lead in the third quarter down to three after scoring nine of the last 11 Lakers points to end the quarter. Bryant then went on a near four-minute span where he hit four consecutive jumpers. Don't fault Bryant for missing the three-pointer on the last possession. Don't fret over Ramon Sessions missing the follow-up trey that could've forced overtime. This game shouldn't have been close. But through sheer will and talent, Bryant made it possible.
"
Most Important Player to Watch: Kobe Bryant
As you can tell, this Lakers team really doesn’t stand a chance without Kobe. He’s stepped it up in the postseason and is averaging 31.2 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 4.6 APG, 1.4 SPG and 40 MPG through five contests thus far.
His 43 points last night in a losing effort was quite incredible. If he can put those types of numbers up again—while his teammates pick up some slack—the Lakers will advance to Round 2 after Game 6.
Key Matchup: Andrew Bynum vs. JaVale McGee
McGee made Bynum eat his words after the L.A. big man proclaimed that closeout games were easy for his team.
The Nuggets' lengthy center continually attacked Bynum and made him look soft for a big stretch of the game. He ended the night with 21 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and shot 75 percent from the field.
Bynum will have to get better and play more intense if the Lakers want to actually have an easy closeout of the Nuggets.
