NBA Draft 2012: Should the Blazers Draft Terrence Jones?

Mike UlstadJun 7, 2018

Terrence Jones doesn't necessarily play a position that Portland is in great need of, but from watching him in his two years at Kentucky, it is obvious that he has loads of talent.

A wing by nature, but more of a post at Kentucky, some questioned what his true position in the NBA should be.

What no one can question, though, is his size. His broad shoulders are built for the next level, which should help him immediately on the offensive end, as he creates his own opportunities to get to the bucket and finish under contact.

Did I mention he's also from Portland? I'm sure there isn't a Blazer fan in Portland who wouldn't love to hear their city boomed through the speakers by longtime P.A. announcer Mark Mason during pre-game introductions.

Jones won't likely be a top-10 pick, but at No. 11, he may be very intriguing to Portland. The question, though, is should the Blazers draft him?

Why They Should

The Portland ties are a huge factor in why they should draft him. But the new GM (whoever it ends up being) likely will not go based on that fact alone. Jones does have supreme size for a wing, though, and he has athleticism in the open court as well He also plays with the high level of passion that Portland fans love.

Defensively, Jones showed himself to be quite a presence last season, averaging nearly two blocks per game and over one steal. To go along with this, he averaged seven rebounds per game—quite a feat considering what Anthony Davis was doing on the boards.

Why They Shouldn't

Not an entirely skilled shooter from outside, Jones has a tendency to go unnoticed in some games. His jumper needs work, and it's a skill he has to improve in order to open up some driving lanes for him at the next level.

While he does play with passion, this passion is often a downside for Jones, which causes some questionable decision-making on the court.

Now, you weigh in. Would drafting Terrence Jones be the right decision for the franchise?
