USC Football Recruiting 2013: 10 Recruits Who Are Must-Gets for the Trojans
USC is going to have to be very creative yet again in recruiting this year, as the scholarship limit for the Trojans is at just about 15 per year.Ā Yet, Lane Kiffin got a couple a recruits to enroll early last year, which likely will increase the allotted scholarship total past 15 this year.
The scholarship reductions, due to the sanctions placed upon the program, will be still felt for a couple more seasons.Ā However, that doesn't seem to faze Kiffin, as he already has five quality commitments for 2013.Ā
Here are 10 prospects who are "must-gets" for the Trojans in 2013.Ā
10. Johnny Johnson, CB
1 of 10Johnson reminds me a lot of current USC CB Nikell Robey. Both are only about 5'8" or 5'9", but they play a bit bigger than their height.
USC plays in the Pac-12, and with Mike Leach coming into the conference at Wazzu, passing the ball is only going to increase around the West. A great cover corner like Johnson would be a great addition to the USC defensive depth chart.
9. Tahan Goodman, S
2 of 10A physical DB prospect, Goodman goes in the 6'2", 190-pound range. He looks great on the hoof, but he performs even better on the back-end.
Goodman has great range and movement skills as a safety, can get off the hashes and will tag a ball-carrier with some thump.Ā
8. Nico Falah, OT
3 of 10A 6'5", 270-pound natural pass protector, Falah would be a nice get to add more depth to the offensive front. You can never have enough good linemen or defensive backs, and with Falah being a gifted pass protector, that seals the deal.
UCLA presents some competition for his services, and it would not be good for the Trojans to see the upstart Bruins take a good player away from them.
7. Priest Willis, DB
4 of 10Yet another top-flight DB prospect,Ā Willis is also in the sights of rival UCLA.Ā
Willis is a 6'2", 190-pound back-end defender who can play both CB and safety. He'd be a great addition for the Trojans, as his versatility could lend depth at four different positions: CB, SS, FS and SLB/nickel LB.
6. Max Redfield, S
5 of 10Okay, I promise this is the last DB on the list.
The West is loaded with great back-end defenders this year, and the Trojans will need a couple safeties in this class due to graduation.
Redfield could be a great fit as a FS. He's 6'2", nearly 200 pounds and has natural ball skills, instincts and outstanding range. He's a long, super-athletic defender who can roam around and make plays.
5. Eddie Vanderdoes, DL
6 of 10USC already has one DT committed in Kenny Bigelow, but the Trojans need at least one more if Leonard Williams plays DE.
Vanderdoes would be the next ideal target (I would think). At 6'4" and 295 pounds, Vanderdoes is extremely strong on his feet, would be an anchor in the middle and would develop into a great run-stuffer.
4. Ty Isaac, RB
7 of 10It's no secret that USC needs RBs in this class, and Isaac is one of the top rock-toters in the nation.
A 6'2", 220-pound elusive speedster from Illinois, Isaac can also catch the football very well.
3. Michael Hutchings, LB
8 of 10Hutchings could impact the Trojans as either an OLB or SS. He's 6'2", 210 pounds and plays for a winner at De La Salle High School in Concord, Calif.
Linebacker isn't a huge need for the Trojans, but adding a player like Hutchings is still important. You get a good player on your roster and keep him away from the other Pac-12 schools. Even if you don't think heĀ canĀ play OLB,Ā withĀ the Trojans needing more safeties, Hutchings still is a must-get.Ā
2. Justin Davis, RB
9 of 10Again, the Trojans likely need more than one RB in this class since the depth is not rich right now at Heritage Hall.
Davis is the best back in the state of California and one of my top six RB prospectsĀ nationally. He's a 6'0", 200-pounder with excellent productivity, play speed, elusiveness, vision, instincts and solid run strength.
1. Su'a Cravens, DB/LB
10 of 10Right now, I'd think that safety or RB would be Cravens' choice to play if he signed with USC. Yet, the 6'1", 205-pounder could also play OLB or even WRāhe's that athletic and versatile.
It's a toss-up and a weekly shuffle as to who's in his upper echelon of schools, but USC is a known major player.
Landing Cravens is big because he could potentially fill a need as a RB or S. He's from the Los Angeles area, and USC needs to continue showing theĀ nationĀ that it has firstĀ dibsĀ on any big-name prospect in the West.Ā
