WWE Mailbag: Answering Your Questions on Dolph Ziggler, John Cena and More

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

It's Friday, so you know that what means—time for the WWE Mailbag.

The format is simple: You ask any of your WWE-related questions, I pick the best ones and give you my answers.

You can ask those questions through either Twitter or Formspring. I'll answer any questions that aren't absolutely ridiculous, but the best and most relevant ones will be answered here on B/R.

In today's mailbag, we tackle a number of topics, including what may be holding Dolph Ziggler back, whether John Cena should have taken time off after Extreme Rules and many more.

Alright. Enough with the intros.

Here is the May 11 edition of the WWE Mailbag.

What Will Sin Cara Do When He Returns?

1 of 10

Since it is rumored that Sin Cara will be returning in late May, do you think he'll make a big impact and be a contender for a Intercontinental, US or Tag Team Championship? (Maybe a World Title in the future if WWE wants to take a huge chance.)

I think the WWE would have loved to do something with Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio, whether it was having them work together or against one another.

But given all of Mysterio's recent problems, I think that's probably off the table for now, and it's much more likely that Sin Cara returns as an upper mid-carder.

He's supposed to be on SmackDown, but it's not like that has to happen, given how little the brand split means these days. Still, I think it will.

If you look at SmackDown, it's pretty thin on the babyface side, especially in the midcard, and that, in turn, will likely leave Cody Rhodes without a feud whenever he's done with The Big Show.

Enter Sin Cara.

Rhodes and Sin Cara have crossed paths before, but they've never really had a full-length feud, and I think a Sin Cara vs. Rhodes feud for the Intercontinental Championship could be a nice little midcard rivalry for the blue brand.

When Sin Cara returns, he's not going to be a main-eventer or a lower-card worker. That'll likely be the case for Rhodes, too, whenever his feud with Big Show ends.

Sounds like a perfect matchup to me.

What's Holding Tyson Kidd Back?

2 of 10

What (or maybe whom) is keeping Tyson Kidd from being a midcard star? The dude puts on great technical matches (as is expected from a survivor of the Hart Dungeon) and has decent to good mic skills. Also, do you see him and Justin Gabriel wearing Tag Team gold?

The obvious answer to that would be that Kidd is not a great mic worker, but I agree when you say that he's a lot better in that category than people give him credit for.

To be honest, though, I think the main thing that's holding him back is the classic "Creative has nothing for you" mentality.

It's largely a BS excuse, but it's used all the time, and with the midcard and tag team scenes not meaning all that much these days, Kidd doesn't really have a firm place on the card because he's not viewed as a main event-level talent.

I'm a big Kidd fan and think he's one of the most underrated workers in the company, but the fact that he doesn't necessarily have a distinguishable gimmick or over-the-top mic skills probably gives creative that "we have nothing you for" sense and thus, holds him back.

That being said, he and Justin Gabriel did seem like they were in line for a decent push after WrestleMania until Gabriel got hurt.

I'd expect them to be added into the tag team mix whenever Gabriel returns from injury and become one of the WWE's top two or three babyface teams.

Where that takes them, I don't know. But I think the WWE realizes Kidd is talented and wants to get him on TV in some sort of role at some point.

What's Holding Dolph Ziggler Back?

3 of 10

From @Whoootiz: What is holding Dolph Ziggler back?

I think we can eliminate Ziggler's in-ring skills from that discussion because he's one of the best wrestlers in the company.

Assuming he doesn't have some sort of backstage heat, though, it's hard to imagine what is holding him back from advancing to the main event, where he belongs.

But—and this is purely my opinion—I think what's really holding him back from reaching superstardom is the fact that he's still tagging along with Vickie Guerrero and Jack Swagger.

In order for Ziggler to break through and become a consistent main-eventer, I think he needs to drop Vickie and Swagger and go solo.

It's hard for Ziggler to be taken seriously as a World title threat right now because it's so easy for the creative team to throw him into a tag team storyline (like they are right now) and get lost in the shuffle because he never gets any mic time.

If you have Ziggler drop Vickie and Swagger, though, he'll have to make it on his own as a singles competitor, which means he won't be held back by Swagger or have Vickie do his talking for him.

That would, in turn, give Ziggler an opportunity to improve his mic skills (which have gotten much better over the last year) and truly break out as a singles star rather than a short-term tag team solution.

A New Corporation Coming?

4 of 10

From @EricDeLash: Do you foresee Johnny Laurinitis forming a stable similar to the corporation w/ Eve, Otunga, Heel Big Show?

I've actually thought about something like this happening for a while because history tends to repeat itself, especially in pro wrestling.

While I'm not sure why you think The Big Show will be turning heel (although it is a possibility), I think there's a remote chance that we see a "Corporation" of sorts with Laurinaitis, Eve and Otunga as the centerpieces.

We're already seeing some makings of a stable with Laurinaitis, Eve, Otunga, Lord Tensai and Sakamato, but I'm not sure if we'll ever see them on-screen together actually recognizing that they're all in cahoots with one another.

Right now, it's sort of as if all those people I mentioned are just heels and thus, they are working with Laurinaitis. But there's no indication that they're all really working together.

Still, I think it's possible, although we'd need a major heel wrestler in the group to make it work.

You'd have Laurinaitis as the evil leader, pick a heel star as the group's main wrestler, Otunga as Laurinaitis' sidekick, Eve as the obligatory female part of the group and then Tensai and Sakamato as the ones who do all the dirty work.

Could it happen? Sure.

Will it happen? I don't know.

But I do like the possibility of another major heel stable dominating the WWE, although thinking the WWE can book it properly is certainly a stretch.

Should John Cena Have Taken Time off After Extreme Rules?

5 of 10

I feel that John Cena should have taken some time off after Extreme rules And come back fresher after a few months. He had a great chance after the injury angle. What do you think?

I want my answer to this question to be: Yes, Cena should have taken time off after Extreme Rules.

But I'm surprising myself here when I say that my answer is: No, he shouldn't have.

And the only reason I say that is because the WWE really needs him right now.

While some time off would certainly refresh Cena's character (you can't miss someone until they're gone), the bottom line is that he's a ratings draw and the WWE can't afford to have him go.

Cena's segments have done well in the ratings department recently, and Raw two weeks ago drew a 3.3 rating when Cena was on the show.

When Cena didn't appear in person this week? It drew a 3.0.

I simply don't think that the WWE can afford to lose its biggest star for an extended period, and that's because of pay-per-view buys, TV ratings and a really thin roster.

Imagine if Cena was written off of TV tomorrow. Who would be Raw's top baby faces? CM Punk and who else?

That's about it.

The WWE needs Cena, and even though it might be better for Cena in the long run if he was gone for a while, it wouldn't be better for the company as a whole.

Which Relative Newcomer Will Become a Major Star?

6 of 10

Out of the current newcomers so to speak (the likes of Sheamus, Daniel Bryan, etc. who have only been round for a couple of years), who do you think will be the next major star to reach levels like HHH, Undertaker, etc.?

It's hard to say that anyone, aside from the likes of Randy Orton and John Cena, will ever reach the same level as Triple H and The Undertaker because they're two of the greatest WWE stars ever.

But if I was forced to pick, I'd go with CM Punk.

Even though Punk had won World titles before, it really wasn't until about a year ago that Punk became a household name in pro wrestling and one of the biggest stars in the business.

Now, however, he's firmly entrenched as the WWE's No. 2 overall star, a bona fide main-eventer and someone that the company can build around for the next five years or more.

Punk is still pretty young in wrestling terms (he's 33), he's always going to be gold on the mic and he can wrestle his tail off.

Not many other superstars can say that, and aside from maybe Sheamus, Punk is the only star not named Orton or Cena who is consistently booked like a main-eventer.

Most of the WWE's other rising stars suffer from spotty booking, which is why I think Punk will be the next star that puts together a resume that rivals some of the greatest stars ever.

But if you don't really include Punk in this category, I'd have to go with Sheamus, who also looks like he'll stick around as a main-eventer for a while.

Who Will Win the Fatal 4-Way Match at over the Limit?

7 of 10

Who will win the fatal 4 way WHC at Over The Limit?

Obviously, turning this match into a Fatal 4-Way makes it a little harder to predict because you don't know if the WWE did that just to add star power to the match or to get the World Heavyweight title off of Sheamus.

Still, I think that, in the end, Sheamus is going to retain his belt.

His title reign just started a little more than a month ago, and I don't see him being a transitional champion. I think he'll have the belt for at least a few months, possibly even all the way through SummerSlam.

The main reason why I think Randy Orton and Chris Jericho are now in this match along with Alberto Del Rio is that it's going to be booked in such a manner that it leads to the next feuds for both Orton and Sheamus.

Once this match is over, I think we'll see Sheamus continue his feud with Del Rio or start a new one with Jericho, while Orton will feud with whomever Sheamus doesn't feud with.

Thus, I could see a situation where Del Rio costs Orton the title and sets up a feud with him or something along those lines.

Given that Over the Limit is probably not going to get a ton of buys, I ultimately think it will be used to draw more interest for the next PPV, No Way Out.

That will result in Sheamus retaining, and these four competitors then splitting off into two separate feuds afterward.

Which WWE Star Currently Has the Most Interesting Character?

8 of 10

Who do you think has the most complex, interesting character in the WWE right now?

As crazy as this might seem (and though I know a lot of people will say Daniel Bryan), I'm actually going to go with AJ.

I can barely believe I'm saying this myself, but over the last several months, AJ has developed more depth to her character than just about anyone we've seen on WWE TV.

She started as the submissive girlfriend of Bryan, who did anything he wanted even though he treated her like crap, and she continued to plead to get Bryan back when he dumped her after her screw-up at WrestleMania.

This, in turn, has led AJ to slowly but surely go crazy since Bryan broke up with her.

She's actually pulling a Daniel Bryan and appears to be gradually turning heel, as she snapped on Natalya during their match and on Kaitlyn twice backstage. It's as if she doesn't want to go bad, but all of her frustration stemming from Bryan is making her do it anyway.

The WWE has invested a lot of time in making AJ go from the sweet and lovable victim to, as I put it in another article, a (fill in the blank with another word for a female dog) whose relationship with her ex has turned her into a different person.

AJ has lost sight of who she was just a couple of months ago, and it's made her character certainly more complex than any Diva on TV and perhaps more intriguing than anyone on the entire roster.

My Most Surprising World Champion

9 of 10

From @georgec1982: Who's the one guy in the business who you thought would never be champion, but did?

Aside from David Arquette?

Truth be told, there are a ton of guys who wound up winning a World title even though I thought that their time on the top of the WWE would never come.

For me, two guys really stick out, though: Christian and The Miz.

Christian was technically a World champion in TNA, but even after all his great matches and promos in the WWE, it didn't seem like Vince McMahon would ever have enough faith in him to give a World title run.

That, of course, changed last year, but it came as a huge shock to me because Christian is getting up there in age, and I figured that his last opportunity to win a World title had passed.

As shocking as Christian's title win was, though, I've still gotta go with The Miz.

I just remember The Miz as the "host" of SmackDown and as the supposed "Marty Jannetty" of his tag team with John Morrison, and there was no way I ever thought he'd become World champion.

I also think that most wrestling fans thought the same thing.

Yet, sure enough, The Miz became the WWE Champion in 2010 and went on to main-event WrestleMania 27.

How many people honestly saw that coming? Five, maybe?

Who Will Be the Top Heel and the Top Babyface in 5 Years?

10 of 10

In five years, who do you think will be the top face of the WWE (includes popular tweeners, I guess) and the top heel?

There's a good chance that John Cena will be the WWE's top babyface in five years, but using age as my primary determining factor, I'll go with Randy Orton.

He's already been a main-eventer for about six years now, but he's still only 31 years old, is at the peak of his career in terms of in-ring ability and looks poised to be at the top of the WWE for the foreseeable future.

Orton is probably the current No. 2 babyface in the company, and with Cena likely slowing down more than Orton does over the next five years, I think that "The Viper" could take over the top babyface spot.

As for the heel spot, I gotta go with none other than Cody Rhodes.

While we could see someone like Dean Ambrose in that role, I think that Rhodes is currently in the best position to be the WWE's top heel in 2017.

He's already one of the company's top heels and better overall performers, but as shocking as it may seem, he's just 26 years old.

Rhodes has proven to be a reliable wrestler and mic worker and is already one of the WWE's most over heels. The only thing holding him back from being the top heel right now is the creative team.

Yet over the next five years, I'd fully expect Rhodes to develop even more and become a household name in the wrestling business.

He's such a natural heel and an incredibly gifted performer. He'll be the best bad guy in the WWE in five years, but probably sooner, too.
