Fantasy Baseball: Stud Second Basemen Flying Under the Radar
Last week, I published an article highlighting five undervalued fantasy first basemen. Now, I turn my focus to one of the stingiest fantasy positions of all: second base.
Aside from a few select stars, productive second baseman are at a premium in the fantasy world. However, there are always a few diamonds in the rough.
Here's a look at some solid second baseman who don't get nearly enough attention.
Omar Infante, Miami Marlins
1 of 4Current Numbers: .326 AVG, 5 HR, 12 RBI, .359 OBP
Owned in 64 percent of leagues (Yahoo! Sports)
After a rough start to the 2012 season, the new-look Miami Marlins have finally begun to turn things around—due in large to the play of second baseman Omar Infante.
After beginning the season in the shadow of stars like Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez and Giancarlo Stanton, Infante has established himself as a cornerstone of the Marlins' lineup and has moved all the way up to the No. 5 spot in the Miami order.
With consistency at the plate and some surprising power, he's well worth a look in most leagues.
Jason Kipnis, Cleveland Indians
2 of 4Current Numbers: .300 AVG, 5 HR, 18 RBI, .377 OBP
Owned in 85 percent of leagues (Yahoo! Sports)
The Cleveland Indians are a surprising 15-11, and no one has been more key to their 2012 turnaround than Jason Kipnis.
While it may be the 25 year old's first full season in the majors, he is quickly establishing himself as one of the most productive young infielders in the American League.
Having hit safely in each of his last ten games, he's a hot commodity across the fantasy baseball world. Grab him while you still can.
Mike Aviles, Boston Red sox
3 of 4Current Numbers: .265 AVG, 5 HR, 19 RBI, .303 OBP
Owned in 87 percent of leagues (Yahoo! Sports)
For the first time in his five-year career, Mike Aviles is part of a legitimately dangerous batting order.
While the 11-16 Red Sox haven't gotten off to the sort of start many expected, Aviles has been one of the bright spots of the club's otherwise nightmarish start to the 2012 season.
While his .265 average isn't overly impressive, Aviles seems to have increased his power considerably as evidenced by his five home runs and 19 RBI. If Boston can turn things around, his numbers will only improve as the season progresses.
Jose Altuve, Houston Astros
4 of 4Current Numbers: .352 AVG, 2 HR, 13 RBI, .393 OBP
Owned in 77 percent of leagues (Yahoo! Sports)
In his first full season of major league play, Houston's Jose Altuve has burst onto the scene as one of the National League's most promising youngsters.
He's flashy, he's quick and perhaps above all, he's undeniably consistent at the plate.
With 16 multi-hit games already under his belt this season, Altuve has become one of the hottest fantasy pickups around.
For whatever reason, he's still available in about 23 percent of leagues.
