UFC on Fox 3 Results: Questions Answered and Lessons Learned

Matthew RothJun 7, 2018

UFC on Fox 3 was one of the most entertaining cards in recent memory. An event built on intriguing yet fun fights, it didn't disappoint in the slightest. With two fighters earning title shots and others earning big "of the Night" bonuses, it delivered in every aspect.

I had some questions before the event, so let's see what was answered and what we learned following the third event on Fox.

Nate Diaz Is the More Talented Diaz

1 of 7

While everyone's been paying attention to Nick, Nate has slowly but surely developed into one of the most complete fighters on the planet. His ability to keep up a ridiculous output of punches, as well as his high-level BJJ, makes him a threat wherever the fight takes place. Now that he's developed a sprawl, he may be even better than Nick.

Oh, and if you missed it, he's also pretty good on the microphone, as displayed at the pre- and post-fight press conferences.

Jim Miller Is Tough, but Even the Toughest Guy Gets Caught

2 of 7

Jim Miller is considered by almost everyone to be one of the toughest fighters in the world. His record supports this, as he had never been stopped in his MMA career before Saturday night. Unfortunately, his entire game plan went out the window after getting caught with that heavy shot in the first round. After that, he went on autopilot and just couldn't establish himself in that fight.

There's no shame in losing to Nate Diaz, but it may be the last time that Jim Miller is ever put in a position for a title shot.

Johny Hendricks Is the New American Kickboxing Academy Killer

3 of 7

Yes, I know that Josh Koscheck is no longer associated with AKA. That's not the point.

Johny Hendricks had to deal with people thinking that his win over Jon Fitch was a fluke in the lead-up to his fight with Josh Koscheck. Well, after Saturday night, we learned that not only is Johny Hendricks ready for the top of the division, but he also hits like a truck.

Paulo Thiago, you've been replaced. Johny Hendricks is the new AKA killer.

Josh Koscheck Is One Tough Dude

4 of 7

Josh Koscheck may be hated by fans for whatever reason, but one thing I do know after Saturday night is that he may be the toughest guy in the division. Sitting on the stage at the post-fight press conference, his eye almost swollen shut, he said that he was ready to fight again and that he and Dana needed to talk about another opponent.

Love him or hate him, he always comes in to fight and will leave everything he has in the octagon. Maybe a move up to middleweight would help restart his career, as there are some really interesting matchups waiting for him.

Lavar Johnson Has Hamhocks for Fists

5 of 7

Lavar Johnson may not be the most well-rounded guy in the UFC heavyweight division, but he is definitely the hardest-hitting. What I learned in his fight is that it's absolutely impossible to think that blocking his punches with 4 oz gloves will result in anything but getting put to sleep.

I don't know what they do with him going forward, but I'd love to see him fight Mark Hunt or Cheick Kongo in the future. Both of those fights sound like a ton of fun and ones that interest me on many different levels.

Alan Belcher Is a Crazy Person

6 of 7

Alan Belcher had to hear it all week that if the fight went to the ground, he would go home without his leg. I'm not joking about that either. He was asked about the leg locks twice during the open workout media scrum and once during the pre-fight presser.

It turns out that he planned on taking the fight to the ground with Rousimar Palhares to prove that he's not afraid of the leg-lock specialist. Not only that, but he almost finished the fight with his own submissions. Absolutely insane, and I love him for that.

Michael Johnson May Be the Best Young Fighter from the Blackzilians

7 of 7

While everyone has been focusing on Melvin Guillard and Rashad Evans, Michael Johnson has been making great strides to improve as a fighter. On Saturday night, he entered his fight with Tony Ferguson as a "live dog" and walked away with the biggest win of his career. If he can keep improving, we may be talking about Michael Johnson as the best fighter from the Boca-based camp.
