UFC on FOX 3 Results: What We Learned from Josh Koscheck vs. Johny Hendricks
On the Fox portion of UFC on Fox 3, in East Rutherford, Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks had an exciting fight—perfect for Fox—as these two showcased almost everything there is in mixed martial arts. When the scorecards were read, controversy was sure to ensue with the decision. Fans may not be too unhappy overall, though, as Hendricks won the split decision.
Here's what we learned from the bout.
What We'll Remember About This Fight
What's not to remember? It was a fantastic fight, and it was perfect for Fox. It featured the a lot of clinch work, a lot of ground work and some great, powerful striking from both fighters.
I think most people will remember how close the decision was as well.
What We Learned About Josh Koscheck
Could Koscheck be on the way down in his MMA career? He has now had two straight split decisions: one where he beat Mike Pierce and now the loss to Hendricks. This loss probably drops him to the lower five of the division, and who knows what's next for him.
We didn't learn much about Koscheck that we didn't already know. He has some serious power and is a great wrestler. All we learned is that he may not be the fighter he used to be.
What We Learned About Johny Hendricks
Anybody who said that Hendricks landed a lucky punch against Fitch was proven wrong, as Hendricks showed he belongs at the top of the welterweight division. He has now beaten two top contenders in a row, and he proved that he is as good as we thought he was.
We also found out that he can take a great shot, so he's got quite the chin on him. I think it's the power of the beard.
What's Next for Koscheck
The welterweight division is an absolute mess, and almost nobody is available for a fight. Expect a matchup with a lower-level fighter for Koscheck to get a confidence boost.
What's Next for Hendricks
Hendricks has beaten Jon Fitch and Josh Kosheck. Carlos Condit and Georges St-Pierre are out. Jake Ellenberger is fighting Martin Kampmann. Jake Shields is going back to middleweight. The only real option for Hendricks is Rory MacDonald.
