The Doctor's Weekly WWE SmackDown Recap: 119 Things We Learned, Loved and Hated
What might be the most surprising thing about Friday's entertaining episode of SmackDown was the quality of the Divas match we witnessed.
Layla, fresh off a return and a Divas title win, faced off against Natalya in a match that saw the two women bring new meaning to the words "turning lemons into lemonade."
These two talented women wrestled a short match that was filled with seamless chain wrestling and flawless exchanges in offense. Natalya has proven her talent in the past, but Layla is showing everyone that a year off does not have to mean an decrease in ability. She might actually be better than when she left.

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
The sign-of-the-night and line-of-the-night games are not producing the way I had hoped, so I have come up with something new which will not revolve around a poll question (see: item 115 and on for details).
About seven months ago I wrote my first recap list as something random to do as a different means of recapping an event. The readers here at Bleacher Report encouraged me to do them for more events. Eventually it became a biweekly column with one for each PPV—with the exception of Extreme Rules, since I was there and could not do the list format effectively.
I can't say thank you enough to the people who come here each week to read the ludicrous things I come up with and take the time to comment. I am working on something special for you guys as a way to say thank you.
Until I get everything worked out I cannot reveal any details, but I think it is something everyone will be really excited about. It will go way beyond simply giving shout-outs to the occasional winner of a prediction contest.
For those of you who are not familiar with this series, each week I recap Raw and SmackDown with a long list.
The entries are made up of equal parts humor, recap, play-by-play, revelations, speculations, questions, answers and anything else I notice during the show. I sometimes comment on commercials too, just because I get bored during them.
I try and interject some fun into these lists, so I hope you have fun reading this week's list of the things we learned, loved and hated from the show.
1. The show begins with a recap of Monday's attacks against John Cena and Brock Lesnar.
2. Sheamus comes out and talks about how he loves to fight.
3. Where's Finlay?
4. Sheamus tries to capitalize off of the already loud "Yes" chants by turning it into one of his own.
5. Daniel Bryan comes out to confront Sheamus.
6. I guess they are having a match to start the show.
7. Sheamus is selling his left shoulder being hurt after his match against Bryan from Extreme Rules.
8. Bryan begins targeting Sheamus' left arm to set up for the Yes Lock.
9. I agree with Booker, this is no time for jiving.
10. After Sheamus sends Bryan over the top rope, Ricardo Rodriguez comes flying off the top turnbuckle with a beautiful cross-body block to Sheamus.
11. Bryan comes in after Alberto Del Rio puts Sheamus in the Cross-arm Breaker, and Bryan applies the Yes Lock for good measure.
12. I like how Bryan is pissed that Del Rio cost him the match instead of acting like all heels get along.
13. I would love to see Alberto Del Rio vs. Daniel Bryan some time in the future if one of them turns face.
14. An ad for Dream Machines plays, and it is interesting to see John Cena wearing a CM Punk shirt in the clip.
15. After the commercial, Sheamus is shown being evaluated by doctors in back.
16. R-Truth, Kofi Kingston and Little Jimmy come out for the next match.
17. Hunico and Camacho come out on their low-rider bike to face the tag-team champions.
18. No Josh Matthews, Camacho did not grow up in a Mexican barrio.
19. Thank God. Rosa is out on the ramp to watch the match.
20. There's some people with her, but I don't care about them.
21. Hunico and Camacho are in control in the early minutes of the match.
22. Primo, Epico and AW seem to be more important to the announcers than the match itself.
23. Kofi finally gets a tag after giving Hunico a monkey-flip.
24. Truth comes in with a head of steam and clears house.
25. Truth and Kofi pull off a nice double team, where Truth throws Kofi over his head and Kofi ends up hitting a frankensteiner on Hunico.
26. Truth hits his finisher on Camacho for the win. They celebrate as the former champions look on from the ramp.
27. If Truth and Kofi actually stay together for awhile, they have the potential to be an entertaining tag team.
28. After commercial we get Brodus Clay and his Solid Gold dancers out for a match.
29. Clay adds a nice touch by giving Naomi and Cameron their own intro, calling them the Funkadactyls.
30. Booker cracks me up. As Cameron and Naomi do their little butt-to-butt move, Booker fives an exaggerated "Shucky Ducky Quack Quack."
31. Michael Cole couldn't help but laugh too.
32. V.I.C.I. comes out and introduces Jack Swagger to face Clay.
33. Ziggler is also out to support his stablemate.
34. I say stablemate because they don't seem like a tag team as much as they do associates who occasionally team up.
35. Clay gives Swagger a dose of his own medicine with a belly-to-belly to start things off.
36. Mr. Ziggles provides enough distraction for Clay to get taken out by Swagger, but Clay gets his revenge with a huge headbutt on Ziggler.
37. Clay goes for the big splash, but Swagger takes a powder.
38. Swagger and Ziggler go up the ramp and Clay wins by count-out.
39. Lame.
40. I want to see Clay lose a match just so we know there is a real feud in place, otherwise Swagger and Ziggler are just Clay's new personal jobbers.
41. Clay brings in some kids to share in the celebration. It looks like this will be a new thing he does since this is the second time in a row he has brought in some kids.
42. I have to admit that the really little kid in the Ryder headband was kind of cute.
43. Speaking of little kids, I have to take a second and give special mention to by friends Mike and Snezena (she's Serbian, it's a real name) who are going to be having their first child soon.
44. If it is a boy I say name him Magnitude. POP POP!!! If it's a girl then go with River or Amelia, but that's just me being an idiot.
44.5. Rest in Peace Starburns, I mean Alex.
45. An extended replay of John Laurinaitis' attack against John Cena.
46. Eve is shown backstage trying to run the show since Johnny Ace took a personal day.
47. She gets pissed and boots Daniel Bryan and Alberto Del Rio out of her office.
48. It's really more like a couple curtains and some posters, but you go ahead and call it an office.
49. I think this is the best way WWE could have used Eve after her heel turn. I like her as a heel more each week.
50. Oh man. I love Damien Sandow's music. It is absolutely perfect for his character. Hallelujah.
51. Hey! It's Derrick Bateman. I forgot he worked here. He reminds me of Scott Putski. By that I mean, no one will remember he worked here in 10 years.
52. Classic. The crowd gives Sandow a "What!" chant and he responds with "Thank you for your irrelevant opinion."
53. He hasn't even wrestled a televised match yet and I already love this guy. His music, Bob Backlund robe complete with towel and mic work are all perfect.
54. Bateman gets on the mic and reminds everyone he won a chance to be on SmackDown from NXT.
55. Do people still win anything by being on NXT? I stopped watching after it became clear it wasn't going anywhere.
56. Bateman says he wants a match against anyone, he doesn't care who it is.
57. Ryback's music hits and the enthusiasm drains out of Bateman's face really fast.
58. You can hear a Goldberg chant in the background.
59. At Extreme Rules, people were chanting Goldberg and RVD for this guy. It was hilarious.
60. Am I the only one who thinks the symbol on Bateman's trunks looks exactly like the classic Batman
symbol with the head cut off? Nananananana BATEMAN!
61. Maybe it was intentional. It doesn't matter, this kid is going down quick.
62. Ryback gets the win in another quick squash. At least we didn't have to see people in the back pretending to be excited to see him wrestle.
63. After another commercial we get Kane out for the next match. Cody Rhodes follows him out to be his partner.
64. I have to give Cody credit. He took a long fall through a table 48 hours before this was taped, and he looks like he is not suffering at all.
65. Big Show is out to team with Randy Orton.
66. I guess these two feuds are going to continue for a bit longer.
67. Rhodes took one of the highest back drops I have ever seen.
68. How to end a tag-team match in three easy steps.
69. Step 1: Orton hits and RKO on Kane.
70. Step 2: Rhodes throws Orton into the ring post.
71. Step 3: Big Show hits the WMD on Rhodes for the win.
72. Decent match. Not much more to comment on. No real progression in either feud took place in this match. Good action, though.
73. Matt Striker is backstage outside the doctor's office waiting for Sheamus.
74. Sheamus comes out with his arm taped up and he says he is here to fight.
75. Layla is out after the commercial to face Natalya.
76. Nattie got the jobber's entrance, I guess she won't be winning this one.
77. This could be OK. Both women are capable of performing well in the ring.
78. Some nice chain wrestling from both women to start off.
79. Has Natalya lost some weight? She is looking slimmer.
80. Natalya eventually uses her superior power to take down Layla down with a spinning clothesline for a near fall.
81. Layla hits a very unique pinning combination for another near fall.
82. Layla hits her finisher to win the match.
83. That was actually one of the better Divas matches I have seen in a long time given how short it was.
84. A lot of good back-and-forth offense and some nice chain wrestling throughout.
85. It just sucks that the crowd is always dead for the Divas matches unless someone has a wardrobe malfunction.
86. Eve is backstage with Aksana and Antonio Cesaro taking some publicity photos.
87. Eve asks if Antonio can be oiled up and she wants Teddy Long to do it.
88. He objects at first but gives in without a whole lot of effort from Eve.
89. Kaitlyn and Alicia Fox are backstage talking when AJ walks up.
90. AJ says she wants to apologize for slapping Kaitlyn last week.
91. Kaitlyn forgives her, but makes the mistake of saying something bad about Daniel Bryan and gets another "bang, zoom, right in the kisser" from AJ.
92. Alberto Del Rio is out after the break for Daniel Bryan's match against Sheamus.
93. When is Ricardo going to get some time of his own?
94. I love how Ricardo is mocking Sheamus' hurt arm.
95. Bryan is in control, working over Sheamus' left arm as we go to commercial.
96. What a way to come back from commercial, with Bryan flying off the apron onto Sheamus.
97. Does anyone else see how WWE does not have the announcers constantly call Daniel Bryan an underdog?
98. I guess when you are as good as Bryan, you can't really be an underdog—unlike Rocky Balboa, who was an underdog in six movies.
99. How many times does someone have to beat big Russians and Mr. T to not be considered an underdog?
100. Bryan is really working over Sheamus' arm throughout this entire match.
101. Sheamus comes back and hits all his signature moves for a two count.
102. Bryan hits a big flying dropkick for another near fall.
103. I think that Sheamus has proven that he can hang with the ring technicians of WWE. He is more than just another powerhouse in my opinion.
104. Wow! I have rarely seen anyone flip the way Bryan did when Sheamus hit him with a double axe-handle.
105. Del Rio jumps up on the apron for a distraction but gets knocked off when Sheamus throws Bryan into him.
106. Bryan comes off the top rope right into a Brogue Kick from Sheamus.
107. Sheamus wins the match and celebrates as Del Rio recovers on the entrance ramp.
108. Good match to end the show with.
109. Bryan looked very good throughout, and Sheamus looked strong by winning with an injury.
110. Other than the Clay and Ryback matches, I would have to say that tonight was a pretty good show.
111. The Divas match was like a mini clinic on how to use as many different types of moves in a short match that you can.
112. The tag champs are probably not going to be a team for very long, but for now they should provide for some decent in-ring action.
113. Sheamus is a good champion for SmackDown, and Del Rio fit right back into the fold after he returned from injury.
114. The humiliation of Teddy Long continued tonight without Laurinaitis even being on the show.
115. I think many of you know that I like to make little references to my favorite TV shows in the recaps, so tonight's game will be identifying the references.
116. List the item number and the show referenced in the comments section. The first person to get all of them in a single comment will get a shout-out on Monday's recap.
117. I will make things a little easier for you, as Nos. 14 and 60 don't count. There are five total references for four different shows.
118. I have to comment on this because it is so ridiculous. After my recording finished, my TV jumped to ESPN2 since that was the last channel I was on. Robert Flores was doing a terrible Chewbacca impression and a halfway decent Stewie Griffin impression, while showing highlights from today's games..
In case you didn't know, May 4th is Star Wars Day. May the fourth be with you, get it? I didn't create it so, don't yell at me.
119. On a final note, rest in peace Adam MCA Yauch. One of the first music videos that truly made me saw "wow" was Sabotage.
Thanks for reading and feel free to share your thoughts on the show and additions to the list below.
