NBA Draft 2012: First-Round Talents Who Will Earn Bust Status
In a few years, we will look back on some of the players to go in the first round of this draft, shake our heads, and say something like, "I can't believe anyone thought that guy was worth that high a draft pick."
That's right, we will be talking about players that are only separated from the bust label by the simple matter of time.
Without further ado, here are the players doomed to fail in the NBA.
Harrison Barnes, SF, North Carolina
Harrison Barnes started off the season as one of the players people felt was in a position to contend for being the No. 1 overall selection in this draft.
His status has taken a hit since then, but he is still an almost certain lottery pick. He shouldn't be.
Barnes doesn't have the game to create his own shot. He doesn't have the handles or the first step to be a potent NBA scorer.
Barnes has a decent shooting touch, but he is not the kind of pure shooter that is going to strike fear in the hearts of opposing defenses. He is not a starting-caliber player on a quality NBA team.
Meyers Leonard, C, Illinois
It seems like every year there is a center prospect like Leonard, and they are almost always a bust. He is a 7-foot player with decent touch in the post.
The problem is, he does not have the strength to get into the post. Meyers is 7'1" and 245 pounds, and he does not have the kind of frame that will allow him to add bulk and maintain his foot speed.
Meyers will be drafted with the hopes that he can turn into a great center, but he will never have the muscle to get off the bench.
Tony Wroten, PG, Washington
There is no doubting Wroten's athleticism. He is an explosive player who can penetrate the lane. However, once he gets to the rack, his touch does not allow for high percentage of makes.
That poor touch extends to his shooting as well. He shot just 16.1 percent from distance in his only year as a college player.
The other problem with Wroten is that he makes poor decisions. He tries to make amazing passes when simple ones will do, and this leads to too many turnovers.
Wroten needs more seasoning before jumping to the NBA. Now he is going to get stuck on the bench and will not have a chance to develop.
