Is WWE Taking Steps To Re-Energize Their Mid-Card Titles?

The Doctor Chris MuellerJan 28, 2009

I have written a few articles in the past regarding the WWE's titles that are not world titles. I have seen a recurring trend in similar articles that other writers agree. I have to say, though, as of late, I feel like the lower titles are beginning to be worth something again.

The first thing I noticed is that they seem to have more matches involving both sets of tag team champs every week. WWE even went as far as to have Miz and Morrison face the Colons last week. It's pretty clear that the WWE is going to put Miz and Morrison over Carlito and Primo, but the fact that both teams have had matches week after week, sometimes more than one, is a testament to the WWE trying to make the division exciting again.

William Regal was by no means a great IC champ, but having the tournament to crown a No. 1 contender for the title was a good idea. There were main eventers in the tournament, which shows that the title should not only be coveted by the undercarders.  The three-week Regal/Punk feud over the title was a little strange, but I think having Punk win on the third try and be so happy to win demonstrates that the WWE is attempting to make people care about that belt again. I think as long as their are legit feuds over the title, it will regain some of its former glory.

Shelton has had the U.S. title for awhile now and with his recent matches with 'Taker, he hasn't defended it in awhile. But I think that by keeping the belt on him and having him cut promos about being the US champ and being proud of it are good. He is clearly the most talented on the roster to have not yet been a world champ. I think he will lose the title to MVP soon, but having a good feud between the two might draw some attention.

The WWE recently released their director, who was reportedly lazy when it came to backstage segments, and now their have been more backstage happenings in every show. It's starting to remind me of about 10 years ago when between each match they had a quick segment. I miss the days of all the backstage antics of Steve Austin, and lets face it, Trish had some of the best moments not in the ring.

Overall, I think they are moving in the right direction, but their is one thing that will hold them back. TV-PG is not what a show about grown men who are trying to blow each other up with pyro should be rated. Go back to TV-14, and give us some dirty catch phrases again. Remember when they actually sold a shirt that said "F*CK FEAR" for Stone Cold?
