WWE Over the Limit 2012: Is 3 PPVs in 7 Weeks Overkill?

The Doctor Chris MuellerJun 7, 2018

WWE's Over the Limit is less than three weeks away and it seems as if we just had a PPV. Oh wait, we did.

WWE held WrestleMania 28 on April 1st and Extreme Rules on April 29th. Now we are set to have Over the Limit air on May 20th, making it three PPVs in 50 days, or seven weeks, however you want to look at it.

Even though WWE had two highly entertaining shows with WM28 and Extreme Rules, it seems like there will be no time to make sure that Over the Limit has a proper buildup.

Less than 24 hours after Extreme Rules went off the air, we already knew about two matches for Over the Limit, which is a good start considering we now have only two Raws and three SmackDowns between now and then.

John Cena will face John Laurinaitis and CM Punk will face Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship. These are two high-profile matches which will have three weeks to build.

It does not seem like enough time given how these matches should be built up.

John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis is the lite-beer version of Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon. Both Johns are not considered as big of stars as VKM and SCSA, but they are what we have right now.

"The boss" vs. "the top guy" feud should have been given a better build over the course of a few months. Up until he brought out Tensai to distract Cena, no one thought we would have a match with Johnny Ace three weeks from now.

I am a fan of both Cena and Laurinaitis for various reasons, which may make me a bit biased in regards to thinking they deserve more buildup, but I think a lot of people will agree with me that Bryan vs. Punk needs more time.

These are the two guys we have wanted to see have a real feud since Bryan was signed to WWE. By "we" I mean the IWC and smarks. A lot of casual fans probably want to see it, too.

These are the two Indy darlings who managed to climb uphill against WWE's traditional buildup for a wrestler and gained ground by sheer support of the fans rather than support from the boss.

It is no secret that Punk was not seen as a major face until he made that now-famous promo back in the summer of 2011.

Bryan was jobbing out to just about everyone on SmackDown before he finally cashed in his briefcase for a title shot and won the World Title from Big Show.

When WWE saw the crowd response to Punk's promo and Bryan winning, it must have clicked on a little light bulb in someone's head and had them say, "These guys can make us money after all."

This is sure to be a wrestling clinic, and I have no doubt that Punk and Bryan can make the program interesting in three weeks—I just hope the feud goes past OTL.

This is a major feud as far as many fans are concerned, and it is one I could see extending through SummerSlam if done right.

Bryan proved he could hold a top title by being one of the most engaging heels on SmackDown, and now it seems WWE wants to test the waters by having him feud for Raw's top title.

These are all good things for Bryan, but the program has to be as good as it can be in order for it to be a real test of Bryan's ability to lead on the flagship show.

This Friday we will probably find out at least one more match for the Over the Limit card, and my guess would be Alberto Del Rio vs. Sheamus for the World title, seeing as Del Rio was promised a title shot which was put off so Bryan could get his rematch.

I cannot say yet what other matches may end up being made, but I think WWE would be smart to work overtime on making sure the feuds we do know about are built up strong in the short amount of time we have over the next three weeks.

One thing I think WWE needs to do here is push this feud during off hours by using the same things they have been using for the past few months: YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

I hate WWE's obsession with social media, but I am willing to get in bed with the devil if it means a better show can be the result.

What do you think—is three weeks enough time to build up a PPV? Is three events in seven weeks too many?
