NFL Rumors: New York Jets Should Trade for Osi Umenyiora
It was inevitable that the situation between the New York Giants and Osi Umenyiora would get ugly again. Umenyiora has had a problem with his contract for a while now and last offseason was even granted permission to seek a trade.
Despite this, Umenyiora remained with the Giants in 2011-12 and helped them win the Super Bowl.
Umenyiora is again looking for an extension this offseason, but does not feel confident he will get it.

According to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPNNewYork.com, Umenyiora said, "Would I want to (stay)? I think it would be ideal. I think I would if things could be worked out. But is that going to happen? I really don't think so."
Things are starting to really get out of hand and Umenyiora is publicly talking about Giants GM Jerry Reese. Reese said that the Giants have offered him an extension two years in a row. Umenyiora claims he has been offered extensions that are incentive based and not guaranteed.
"Jerry tells the world they offered me an extension and I turned it down. And I look like a greedy pig for turning it down," Umenyiora said.
The only choice the Giants have in order to settle this conflict would be to give Umenyiora the extension he is looking for or trade him.
That is where the New York Jets come in.
The Jets should definitely try and make a trade for Umenyiora.
The Jets defense has struggled to get to the quarterback in recent years. One of their biggest concerns going into this offseason was improving their pass rush, and Umenyiora has made a career out of sacking the quarterback and causing turnovers. Over the last seven seasons, Umenyiora has averaged 9.7 sacks and 4.1 forced fumbles.
Injuries have been a concern for Umenyiora over the past few seasons. However, the Jets have two young defensive ends, so Umenyiora wouldn't have to play every down.
The Jets have drafted a defensive lineman in the first round of the last two NFL drafts. In 2011, they chose Muhammad Wilkerson with the No. 30 pick. In the 2012 draft, the Jets took Quinton Coples with pick No. 16.
Umenyiora would be a veteran presence for these young defensive ends to learn from. He would also be a leader for the entire defense and team, as he won two Super Bowls with the Giants. The Jets could use that winning experience on their team as they look to get back into the playoffs.
The Jets should jump on this chance to bring in a veteran player that will fill so many needs on their team.
