NBA Playoff Schedule 2012: Teams That Won't Defend Home-Court Advantage

Ethan NorofJun 7, 2018

Much has been made about the NBA playoff teams that hold home-court advantage in the first round, but how much does it really mean in terms of winning a series?

During the opening weekend of the heated action, we saw the Memphis Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers both lose on their own floor, and having the "competitive advantage" is often overblown to epic proportions.

The first round represents an opportunity for us to see the most lopsided upsets with 16 teams in play. But will any favored team really fail to move on to the second round?

Here is where we stand in the playoffs schedule (courtesy of NBA.com) heading into Game 2 in every series.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers were a very respectable 23-10 during the regular season at home, but the performance against an Orlando Magic team playing without Dwight Howard in Game 1 was very uninspiring.

Indiana should have had no problem moving right through Orlando with Glen Davis matched up against Roy Hibbert inside, but a poor shooting performance really put a cap on what the Pacers were able to do.

David West was the lone member of the Pacers to shoot above 50 percent (8-of-14) in the inaugural game, and Indiana is going to need a lot more than that to have a prayer of meeting expectations as the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

Atlanta Hawks

Yes, the Hawks came out with a bang on Sunday night and stunned the Celtics, but will that be a continuing trend?

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Michael Cunningham, Joe Johnson said before the series that he hoped his home building would be loud in Atlanta's favor, and that's what we saw in the inaugural game against Boston.

If Ray Allen (ankle) remains unable to play moving forward, this scenario could change.

Another factor to consider for the Hawks will be Rajon Rondo's potential suspension for Game 2 after bumping the referee late in Game 1, as his absence could obviously shift the momentum in the series.

However, the first game was likely the worst effort we'll see from Boston throughout the series. Simply put, Boston is a better team than it showed.

The Celtics shot under 40 percent from the floor and didn't make a three-pointer, yet Boston only lost by nine points.

It's not like Atlanta blew Doc Rivers' club out of the water, and the Hawks remain a very beatable team.

Memphis Grizzlies

Whether you want to call it the "Grindhouse," FedExForum or any other name, the Grizzlies were an outstanding 26-7 in their home building this season.

So, what happened on Sunday night?

Chris Paul led the Los Angeles Clippers to a ferocious comeback in the fourth quarter, and the Grizzlies seem to be lacking the "killer instinct" that we've seen previously from this group.

The Grizzlies do not need to win on their home floor to come out with a victory in this series, and Memphis will look to prove that the club can take its show on the road and get at least one inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
