Mayweather vs. Cotto Predictions: Money May's Undefeated Reign Isn't in Danger
One week remains until Floyd Mayweather successfully puts an end to all of the speculation that Miguel Cotto can defeat him.
The fight will take place on May 5th at the MGM Grand, and it will give Mayweather one more thing to look forward to prior to his impending jail sentence—which was pushed back in honor of this matchup. The judge presiding over Mayweather's domestic abuse case agreed to delay his sentence until after this epic fight. That's how big of a deal it is.
The Boston Herald's Bill Dwyre writes that the sentence will start on June 1st because the Las Vegas judge who handed down the sentence said that the city's economy needed this fight and couldn't afford to lose it because Mayweather was a no-go.
This—beating Cotto—is the final item on his agenda before those 90 days in jail. And because of that, you can be certain that Mayweather will make it worthwhile.
Until that day comes, he isn't thinking about jail. He's only thinking about defeating Cotto and keeping his pristine 42-0 record intact. He told Dwyre:
""I don’t want to even think about that. My mindset in life is that it is gonna be what it is gonna be."
"
Still, Mayweather isn't discounting Cotto as an opponent. He knows the May 5th battle will be exactly that—a battle. But he didn't become one of the greatest boxers of his generation by doubting himself.
Love him or hate him, his allure is his bravado, which will be on full display against Cotto. As he told Dwyre and a media scrum, "In the sport of boxing, when you get to this level, it becomes a business. You’ve got to put [rear ends] in the seats."
Next weekend's fight will do just that. The match is being heralded as the second-biggest pay-per-view event since Mayweather fought Oscar De La Hoya. It will be a show, and it will give Mayweather something good to think about while he serves out those long 90 days.
