Brandon Weeden: Browns Would Be Foolish to Move Colt McCoy Without QB Battle

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

The Cleveland Browns put themselves in a corner in the first round of the NFL draft when they selected Oklahoma State Cowboys quarterback Brandon Weeden, as they now have to figure out what to do about Colt McCoy.

The Browns took the Texas Longhorns passer in the third round of the 2010 draft, but it appears he won't be around for much longer.

According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, the Browns general manager Tom Heckert is now considering moving McCoy after selecting Weeden in the first.

Browns general manager Tom Heckert said Thursday that the team is considering trading McCoy after drafting quarterback Brandon Weeden with their second first-round pick, No. 22 overall, from Oklahoma State.

"

While one can understand the team's interest in moving McCoy right away, some would argue it is rather foolish to think about moving their experienced quarterback in favor of a rookie, despite the 6-15 career record—at least without giving him a chance to win the position at camp.

Weeden is 28 years old—three years older than McCoy—but there is no proof yet that he will be able to transition smoothly from the college to pro level.

Given that every player doesn't always turn out to be who teams thought they were, the Browns could be jumping the gun by moving McCoy too soon.

McCoy hasn't exactly been a stud, but he also hasn't been given the tools or time to really prove anything. In 21 games, McCoy has thrown just as many touchdowns as interceptions, 20, so he is still fighting an uphill battle to earn the spot.

He just shouldn't be taken out of the running, as there is right now no proof that Weeden can handle the situation any better.

According to the Packer Report's Bill Huber, a source told him the Browns and Packers have already begun to discuss a possible trade.

The Packers are in need of a quality backup after losing Matt Flynn to the Seattle Seahawks this offseason, so grabbing someone like McCoy is a no-brainer for them.

The bigger issue here is the Browns, who are in the midst of trying to find the right pieces for success, could be moving a possible key player to their future.

There is no doubt that Weeden could be a stud, and his age could bode well in terms of maturity and leadership. But the one thing the Browns must think about before moving McCoy is what they will do if Weeden doesn't pan-out.

The Browns don't have to move McCoy, and until they have fully seen what Weeden can do, they should perhaps consider leaving all their options on the table.
