NFL Rumors: Teams That Must Make a Move for Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

When the Dallas Cowboys traded the No. 14 and No. 45 picks in the 2012 NFL draft to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for the right to select Morris Claiborne at No. 6, cornerback Mike Jenkins became available.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Twitter feed, the team is going to be actively shopping the No. 25 pick from the 2008 draft.

What's more, per PFT's Mike Florio, Jerry Jones is willing to move him during the 2012 draft itself, and could be looking to recoup some picks after losing a solid second-round selection in the Claiborne deal.

Jenkins is approaching the final year of his rookie contract and has been a starter since 2009.

He was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2010, but has been dealing with recent injuries that kept him sidelined for some time during the 2011-12 season.

Let’s take a look at some teams that could be interested in the talented 27-year-old CB, who definitely still has something left in the tank.

Detroit Lions

The Lions' biggest need in the draft was a tackle, which is something they addressed last night by selecting Riley Reiff at No. 23 overall.

The team will not be on the clock again until No. 54, and it’s unlikely that they will find any corners with as much promise as Jenkins with that pick.

With Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler and an emerging Christian Ponder in the division, the Lions simply cannot afford to ignore their cornerback problem and now have a perfect opportunity to acquire a good player.

Detroit is a competitor, but they can’t be a serious contender until they fix the secondary. Jenkins represents the best chance to do that immediately.

Kudos to New England for realizing that they lost the Super Bowl because of their poor pass-rushing ability and coverage skills.

Bill Belichick went out and grabbed DE/OLB Chandler Jones and ILB Dont'a Hightower after trading up in the first round, and could use the rest of his stockpiled picks to swing a deal for Jenkins.

This team does not have a huge window open to continue competing for championships, so they need players who are ready to contribute now—like Jenkins—in their secondary.
