NBA Playoffs 2012 Bracket: Celtics vs. Hawks Will Highlight Round 1 Action
The first round of the NBA playoffs always features quite a few mismatches, but one series that doesn't fall into that category this season is the Boston Celtics against the Atlanta Hawks. Since the teams are evenly matched, it should make for a hotly contested matchup.
Let's take a look at the outlook for both teams heading into the postseason and make a prediction for how the series will eventually turn out. For a complete look at the full bracket of opening-round series, visit the official league site.
Boston Celtics
There were no shortage of Celtics doubters around the trade deadline when the rumor mill connected just about every one of their stars to a potential deal. Danny Ainge dismissed those claims, and the team has turned things around in a big way ever since.
Everybody knows about the big four, but it's really the emergence of Brandon Bass and Avery Bradley that has fueled the team's late run. The pair has averaged a combined 29 points in April, and the Celtics need them to carry those hot streaks into the playoffs.
The key to the series for Boston will be defensive intensity. When the Celtics are clicking on all cylinders, they become a nightmare matchup since they are so disciplined on that end of the floor. They have a tendency to get lackadaisical at times, however, and that would doom them.
Atlanta Hawks
Atlanta's calling card is balance. The Hawks don't have a singular dominant force they rely upon, but instead have seven or eight players who make an impact every night. That allows them to pick up victories even when top scorers Josh Smith and Joe Johnson have an off night.
Their athleticism will be the toughest thing the Celtics will have to deal with. Boston's older roster doesn't have as much bounce as it once did, so the Hawks must use that to their advantage on both ends in order to win the series.
Al Horford's injury hurts, but Ivan Johnson has actually been playing pretty good in his absence. As long as Horford being out doesn't stop the Hawks for dominating the glass, an area of weakness for Boston, they should be fine.
Prediction
There really isn't much difference between the teams. Add in the fact that both teams had good records at home during the regular season, and it seems like an extended series is on the horizon. A few key moments throughout the series will decide it.
All told, I think Boston's veteran experience will overcome Atlanta's youthful exuberance. The Celtics know their championship window is closing quickly, and they would love to lift one more banner before it's over.
Celtics win in seven games.
