WWE Extreme Rules 2012: John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar Match Destined to Fail

Adam WellsApr 24, 2012

WWE is trying to tell us something with the way the John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar match has been built. There is a feeling of uneasiness surrounding the whole thing, yet there is only one outcome that makes sense at Extreme Rules. Lesnar has to go over Cena, by any means necessary.

The problem with trying to figure out what will happen is the way WWE has presented the Lesnar-Cena story on television the last three weeks.

Instead of telling us that Lesnar is a monster heel that will destroy anyone and everyone in his path, he has been built as someone who just wants all of Vince McMahon's money and his name attached to the start of Raw.

Cena, on the other hand, is telling everyone that he is afraid and that he doesn't know what he is going to do right now. That would be a fine story to tell, except for the fact that he never acts different when he is on television.

If Cena wants to get over the fact that he is no longer the confident superman character that he has been for so long, he needs to actually make the audience believe it. Instead, he shows up every week smiling, saying the same things in the same way that he does everything else.

Based on how this story has been set up, it seems quite clear that Cena is going to win. He is the hero who is supposed to save WWE from any possible adversity.

Yet the logic in having Lesnar lose his first match back is virtually non-existent. If he is going to have any kind of drawing power after this show, Lesnar has to go over in dominating fashion.

Unless there is a plan to turn Lesnar face and Cena heel—which isn't going to happen, so don't ask—nothing about this story makes sense. Nothing about the match is going to make sense either, since Cena desperately needs to beat a top star after losing to Rock at WrestleMania and being destroyed on television when Lesnar first returned.

Lesnar has to win because he is the returning star going up against the No. 1 performer in his first match back. WWE didn't try to sell us on what was really at-stake with this match. Instead, we got a half-put together idea that was executed poorly on television.
