Mayweather vs. Cotto: Bulking Up Won't Hurt World's Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Some folks are concerned that Floyd Mayweather Jr. might have trouble with Miguel Cotto due to the fact that he's moving up one weight class for the fight, but they needn't worry: Money is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

It's not like Mayweather hasn't ever moved up before. Remember, he did the same thing back in 2007 when he took Oscar De La Hoya's WBC light middleweight title in a split decision.

Cotto isn't in the same league as "The Golden Boy" and should pose no problems for Mayweather.

One concern expressed stems from the misguided perception that Mayweather will be slower with the added weight.

Trust me, it won't matter.

Muscle mass, if it's in the right places, can actually make people faster. For example, in track and field most of the top sprinters have monster thighs. Conversely, the men and women who run long distance are usually as skinny as a rail.

Besides, when Money fought De La Hoya he clearly didn't suffer. In fact, Mayweather soundly beat him by using his straight right hand to perfection in concert with the best defensive skills in boxing.

Cotto is going to find himself severely outmatched once he's in the ring with Money. He isn't quick enough to keep up and will eventually find himself on the ropes and out of the match.

Although you'll never find a fighter who isn't confident in their own abilities, Mayweather isn't concerned in the least about moving up for this fight.

Per the DailyNews.com, Mayweather spoke on the matter:

"

My body feels great. I always fight around the weight I carry when I am not fighting. Now I can just work harder to feel stronger and more comfortable at 154 pounds. I haven't had to adjust that much because my body has always just kind of found its comfort zone and that's where I fight. I have been given a special gift with my weight. I have never had to worry about it other than to get in the best shape possible for all of my fights.

"

If this were any other boxer we're talking about, I might contribute his statement to pure bravado. But since this is Money Mayweather—with the track record to prove it—I'm buying what he's selling here.

I have Mayweather winning this fight with a knockout in the sixth round. He will out-quick, outhit and outclass Cotto in every possible way on his way to his 43rd straight victory as a pro, further cementing his legacy as one of boxing's all-time greats.
