UFC 145 Results: Travis Browne and the Top 10 Heavyweights in the UFC
What a performance from Travis Browne.
He came out guns blazing, and—at 6'7", 260 pounds—hit Chad Griggs with a double flying knee that started it all off.
Browne got Griggs down, laid a bit of ground and pound, and Griggs inexperience on the ground was evident, as he left his arm in a dangerous position, and Browne locked up the arm triangle choke.
Then, to make things even worse, Griggs pushed Browne in the wrong direction and basically gave him the submission.
With the impressive win by Browne, let's take a look at where he sits in the heavyweight division.
No. 10: Roy Nelson
1 of 10It may be time for Roy Nelson to make some serious changes.
At UFC 143, Nelson lost all three rounds to Fabricio Werdum, and with that, he is now 1-3 in his last four fights, the lone win being a third-round TKO over now-retired Mirko Cro Cop.
Nelson came in at his lowest weight ever for this fight, so he is getting in better shape. Maybe Nelson should take some time off and see if he can't get down to light heavyweight.
No. 9: Travis Browne
2 of 10That was one heck of a night for Travis Browne.
He landed a double flying knee, scored some ground and pound and finished with an arm triangle choke.
That was only the second submission of Browne's career, and he was obviously stunned, yelling at the camera in the cage, "A submission? Seriously? A submission?"
Browne is sure to get a fight with a solid contender next.
No. 8: Mark Hunt
3 of 10With Mark Hunt's impressive win over Cheick Kongo, he catapulted himself well into the top 10 heavyweights in the UFC.
Hunt has now won three fights in a row, including knockouts over Kongo and Chris Tuchscherer, while he won a decision over "Big" Ben Rothwell.
Hunt was looking to fight again in Australia—one week after his win—but he'll have to settle for a main-card spot on UFC 146 against Stefan Struve.
No. 7: Fabricio Werdum
4 of 10Fabricio Werdum made his return to the Octagon in triumphant fashion as he beat the Season 10 winner of The Ultimate Fighter, Roy Nelson, by unanimous decision.
Werdum is now 4-1 in his past five fights, with the only loss coming at the hands of current No. 1 contender, Alistair Overeem.
Werdum also holds a notable win over Fedor Emelianenko. Maybe you saw it.
No. 6: Minotauro Nogueira
5 of 10At UFC 140, Minotauro Nogueira almost avenged his loss to Frank Mir.
But then, Mir locked in a kimura, and he proceeded to break the arm of Nogueira.
Nogueira has now gone 2-3 in his last five, alternating wins and losses.
He may not be much more than a gatekeeper now, and with that broken arm, he is sure to be out for quite some time.
No. 5: Shane Carwin
6 of 10Shane Carwin is the former UFC interim heavyweight champion, and he's a force to be reckoned with.
Unfortunately, he was manhandled by Junior dos Santos in his last fight. JDS earned a 15-minute beatdown of Carwin and the unanimous decision victory.
Carwin is currently out dealing with injuries, and his return is yet to be announced.
No. 4: Frank Mir
7 of 10Frank Mir is back, and he is kicking ass and taking names.
Mir looked to be in prime form at UFC 140, as he defeated Minotauro Nogueira by submission, becoming the first man to ever knock him out and the only man to ever submit him.
With Alistair Overeem's recent debacle, Mir has been promoted from No. 1 contender fight to title fight against Junior dos Santos at UFC 146.
No. 3: Cain Velasquez
8 of 10Unfortunately for Cain Velasquez, he was knocked out in vicious fashion by Junior dos Santos, and he lost his heavyweight belt at UFC on Fox 1.
Cain has wins over some top competitors, so he will remain entrenched towards the top of the division.
He was originally going to fight Frank Mir for a No. 1 contender spot, but now that Mir has been promoted to the title shot, Velasquez does not have a confirmed opponent for UFC 146.
No. 2: Alistair Overeem
9 of 10At UFC 141, Alistair Overeem staked his claim as a top heavyweight in the world and earned his shot at the UFC heavyweight title.
Overeem defeated Brock Lesnar via first-round TKO and became the No. 2 heavyweight in the world in so doing.
Unfortunately, Overeem's random drug test came back with a testosterone to epitestosterone ratio of 14:1, which is a major red flag.
He will have a meeting with the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Tuesday, April 24, to attempt to explain the discrepancy.
No. 1: Junior dos Santos
10 of 10At UFC on Fox 1, Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez and became the heavyweight champion of the world.
This was the first clear No. 1 versus No. 2 heavyweight matchup in a long time, and Dos Santos treated Velasquez the same way he treated all his other opponents.
JDS is now the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, and will face off against Frank Mir at UFC 146 with the belt on the line.
