East Series Champ Matt Kobyluck Wins Toyota All-Star Wreck Fest
Having had the pleasure of being at the Toyota All Star Showdown several years ago, you just know that the race is going to be wild and wooly. With no points at stake and national bragging rights up for grab, the Showdown is flat-out, no holds barred racing for each and every one of the 250 laps.
This Showdown did not disappoint in that respect. With double-digit cautions, many racers, including pole sitter Chris Johnson, experienced trouble on the track.
Other notables, such as Ricky Carmichael and Steve Park, also had their share of incidents throughout the race. Even Austin Dillon, driving the number 3 car for grandfather Richard Childress, experienced some trials on the track.
The Showdown is the All Star event for the Camping World East and West series. The race is also a national audition of sorts for many of the drivers in these two developmental leagues as they try to catch the eyes of team owners in the upper levels of the sport.
There were some notables in the Showdown who ran well for most of the race. "Sliced Bread" Joey Logano, who will assume the Joe Gibbs Racing Home Depot Cup car this year, looked strong all race, especially on the long runs.
Peyton Sellers, the former driver with East Champion Andy Santerre, also looked strong. Although driving for another owner and team in the Jigiloo car, Sellers seemed to have the car and the determination to get into victory lane.
Andy Santerre was actually doing crew chief duties for a West driver, David Mayhew. Under Andy's coaching, his driver hung in the top ten for most of the race.
And then there was Matt Kobyluck, reigning Champion of the East Series. In his Mohegan Sun sponsored car, this first Native American ever to win a NASCAR championship was in the hunt throughout the evening.
These valiant drivers pushed and shoved, driving their cars hard. In the end, it came down to the white flag lap to determine the winner.
Yet, even then, the winner was not clear. In an epic battle, Peyton Sellers and Joey Logano raced hard.
It appeared that Sellers had the race until the very last lap. Logano dived under Peyton and tried to muscle his way into the win.
Unfortunately for Sellers, Joey drove his car too hard into the turn and crashed right into Sellers, driving Peyton into the wall. Logano crossed the finish line, just ahead of Matt Kobyluck, with Sellers' wrecked car stopped just short of the finish.
But the race was not over. After reviewing the finish, NASCAR decided to penalize Logano for rough driving. That gave the race win to the Mohegan Sun team of Matt Kobyluck.
While Matt did his burnouts, Peyton Sellers had a few choice words with Joey Logano. The crowd stood stunned, watching Matt's crew climb the fence in celebration, a la Tony Stewart style.
In Victory Lane, Kobyluck thanked his team and his wife Lori and family, who he said he has "missed terribly" this whole week. He shared that he couldn't believe that it came down to the last lap yet again, but acknowledged that this was typical Showdown racing.
At this time, it is still not clear where Joey Logano finished. NASCAR is still reviewing the penalty and will announce the official results sometime today.
