WWE Rumors: The Rock vs. John Cena Rematch Would Be Bad for Business

Adam WellsJun 1, 2018

WWE loves to repeat itself with an idea, especially if that idea is as financially successful as The Rock vs. John Cena match at WrestleMania 28. It is no surprise that the company would be thinking about doing that again.

However, it is not the way the powers that be should be thinking.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, the two matches WWE is discussing for WrestleMania 29 are The Rock vs. Cena Part II or Rock vs. Brock, possibly for the WWE championship.

Factors would include how over Lesnar is compared to Cena, the fact Cena vs. Rock just happened the year before while Lesnar vs. Rock wouldn’t have happened on a big stage (2002 SummerSlam) by that point in more than a decade, at a time when neither were anywhere as big mainstream names as they are today.

While there was a lot of good that came out of Rock vs. Cena at WrestleMania, both financially for the company and on television for the fans, there are obvious reasons to avoid doing it again.

The first and most important factor working against a sequel is because the novelty will be gone. Fans largely flocked to this show because it was Rock's first singles match in nine years, it was at WrestleMania and we wanted to see how he would do.

Unfortunately, the match was not able to live up to all of our wildest expectations. It was not a classic contest by any means. It was a solid, well-put-together match between two superstars who know what it takes to get a reaction, but it is not like it was an all-time great WrestleMania bout.

The second problem with doing the match again is that you completely ruin the credibility of what this year's match was. Rock vs. Cena was billed as a "Once In a Lifetime Battle."

I know WWE has no problems rewriting history—or, in some cases, ignoring it completely—but what good would it do to have the match again when you just told them last year it was the only time they would ever see it?

The third and final reason not to do the match again is because WrestleMania 28 felt very much like the end of the story. Some matches can be used to set up a rematch—case in point: Undertaker vs. Triple H or Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels—others are made to finish a story.

The Rock proved his point. He showed the world that, by defeating Cena along with Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin, he is the best WWE star of all time (in storyline, of course). Why would he do it again?

WWE, please, move these two superstars on to bigger things that can make WrestleMania 29 even more successful than this year's show was.
