MMA: The 12 Most Unexpected Post-Fight Moments
The action during the actual fight sometimes pales in comparison to what happens once the final bell rings. Normally a time for cliche questions that fighters have no desire to answer, sometimes a fighter's raw emotion comes out and we witness something extraordinary.
In the few moments where the real truth comes out, fighters often get a little ahead of themselves. It can be a PR person's worst nightmare when a person who's been trained to fight for the past six to eight weeks gets handed a microphone.
Nick Diaz is just one of the men who've become media gold after a bout. He's made a career of making headlines with his mouth and post-fight antics along with some real fighting skills.
The people on this list may not be on Diaz's level yet, but they definitely opened our eyes after the final bell.
Tank Abbot: The Actor?
1 of 12Tank Abbott came out in typical fashion and downed John Matua with a flurry of power punches. The KO sent Matua's body into a tremble with his arms and legs stiffened.
Not satisfied with a dominant victory, Abbott invited his opponent to stand back up.
As Matua continued to convulse, Abbott decided to mock the unconscious warrior in one of the worst showings of sportsmanship in MMA history.
Jose Aldo Is a Man of the People
2 of 12After scoring a last second (4:59 of the first round) KO, Jose Aldo wanted to celebrate. For a moment he thought about climbing the cage but instead barreled through the Octagon staff and ran into the mob of Rio.
Aldo disappears inside the mass amount of people attempting to celebrate with the UFC Featherweight champion but re-emerges on the shoulders of fans as they bring him back to the cage.
It's not often you see an entire arena get behind one man but this was truly epic. Not only were we shocked at Aldo running into the crowd but amazed at how every single person in the crowd began chanting for Aldo.
Don't Be Scared Homie
3 of 12It's clear that KJ Noons and Nick Diaz aren't exactly the best of friends. Asking a pro-Noons crowd if Diaz deserved a rematch, the fans responded in kind with a chorus of boos. Diaz took the mic and uttered one of the best one liners in MMA history, "Don't be scared homie."
If the interview would've stopped there nobody would think anything of it. But the talking continued as Bill Goldberg attempted to let us know "the show was over." He was obviously wrong.
Noons and his father kept egging Diaz on and a brawl nearly erupted inside the cage. Diaz claimed it was Noons' father who started it and he was simply reacting.
Paul Daley Lands the Best Punch of the Fight... After the Bell
4 of 12Paul Daley spent nearly the entirety of three rounds fighting off his back while listening to random insults from Josh Koscheck. Obviously infuriated with his performance and the countless barbs thrown his way, Daley lashed out.
Walking over to Koscheck, Daley unleashed a punch that was partially blocked. Daley would be tackled by the referee who asked what was all on our minds at the time.
"Are you kidding me?"
Run Forrest Griffin, Run!
5 of 12Forrest Griffin was utterly embarrassed in his bout with Anderson Silva at UFC 101. Losing in the manner that he did was eye-opening enough but many fans were waiting to hear from one of their all time heroes following the bout.
Unfortunately, we didn't get that chance as Griffin pleaded "no mas" and then hopped to his feet to run out of the cage.
Griffin's exit resembled a NBA player stepping back to avoid being posterized; yeah it saved you the initial embarrassment but we can still look back and shake our heads at you.
Nick Diaz Is Done with This MMA S***
6 of 12After being frustrated for five rounds against Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz was no doubt in an emotional state. Perhaps speaking with too much emotion and not enough thought, Diaz surprisingly announced his retirement from the sport.
Many fans felt that Diaz would make a quick return to MMA and attributed his sudden retirement to being emotional following the loss to Condit. But Diaz seems to be keeping his word and has stayed away from the cage since UFC 143.
Of course a failed drug test and ongoing hearings are also likely contributors for Diaz's absence from MMA as well.
Anderson Silva Takes the High Road
7 of 12First off let me apologize for the video quality; this was the only clip or image I could find of this happening and I think you can figure out which one is Anderson Silva.
Now that we got that out of the way we can examine this eye popping moment following the main event at UFC 117.
For weeks, Chael Sonnen had been on a "bash Silva" strategy coming into the fight saying many things that would've enraged any man. Not only did Sonnen talk a big game but he backed it up for four-and-a- half rounds.
After the trash talk and being dominated for nearly all of the fight, Silva could've said any number of derogatory comments and he would've been justified. But in a moment of pure class, Silva walked over to his adversary and bowed at his feet to show respect.
Don't expect this to be repeated when these two men square off in one of the biggest rematches in UFC history.
Jason "Mayhem" Miller Ignites a Brawl
8 of 12The questions on whether Jason "Mayhem" Miller sneaked his way into the cage or if Strikeforce encouraged him to be there will always be up for debate.
What's clear is that you don't want to ask Jake Shields for a rematch when Nick Diaz is in the building.
The actual brawl happened so quickly and Strikeforce attempted to switch cameras before anyone caught it on live TV but it was too late.
Maybe someone should bring in extra security when a Diaz is in the cage following a fight?
Shinya Aoki Adds Insult to Injury
9 of 12As if snapping Mizuto Hirota's shoulder wasn't bad enough, Shinya Aoki decided to go that extra mile to show he really cared.
After initially celebrating for a few moments, Aoki walked back over to scream in Hirota's face while flipping him off. Then Aoki decided everyone in Hirota's corner and in the stands deserved the same treatment as well.
Aoki fans were initially too busy being in awe of Hirota's shoulder popping out of place to grasp what had just happened during Aoki's celebration.
Chael Sonnen Lays Down the Challenge
10 of 12Once Chael Sonnen emerged victorious against Brian Stann at UFC 136, fans were eagerly anticipating what Sonnen would say in his post-fight interview.
Always up for a good sound bite, Sonnen didn't disappoint as Joe Rogan entered the Octagon. Channeling his inner-WWE, Sonnen laid down a challenge for Anderson Silva complete with its own stipulations.
All we were missing was a mock contract signing that turned into a brawl.
Michael Bisping Must Be on Summer Break Because He Has No Class
11 of 12The war of words heading into UFC 127 between Jorge Rivera and Michael Bisping got more tense by the day. Rivera, a life-long journeyman seemed to do an excellent job of getting under the skin of Bisping.
All that came to a head (literally) when Bisping delivered a blatantly illegal knee to Rivera in the bout. Bisping would later finish Rivera and would go on a post-fight rampage that made the Brit public enemy number one.
Bisping walked to Rivera's corner and spat at/towards/in the general direction of his cornermen. Not only that, but as Rivera attempted to make amends with the man he had bashed for weeks, Bisping instead chose to continue the trash talking and made no attempt to quell the bad blood.
The Brit has recently attempted to gain more fans but with acts like this it's not hard to imagine why few are eager to jump on Bisping's bandwagon.
Brock Lesnar Let's Us Know What His Evening Plans Are
12 of 12It wasn't enough that Brock Lesnar turned Frank Mir's face into a bloody mess during their climatic showdown at UFC 100. Nor was it enough that Lesnar walked over to a still senseless Mir and got in his face.
And still it wasn't enough when Lesnar let us know what he did with Mir's horseshoe.
No, the best moments came in Lesnar's post-fight interview when he managed to offend a major UFC sponsor and tell us his lovemaking plans.
This interview remains one of the highlights people think back upon when remembering Lesnar's brief MMA run.
