Tim Tebow: Jets' Use of Tebow Will Doom Mark Sanchez's Career in New York

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

The New York Jets traded up 12 spots to land Mark Sanchez in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft.

A mere three years later, roughly a month before the 2012 draft, the Jets traded for Tim Tebow and destroyed Sanchez's Jets career in the process.

Make no mistake about it, Sanchize won't survive TebowMania.

Starting left guard Matt Slauson was quoted by ESPN New York's Rich Cimini saying:

"

It’s like we’re going to be two separate teams, but as far as I know, Mark is still going to be our guy.

"

Slauson went on to say that the game plan favors Sanchez's strengths, but so did the offense that Kyle Orton ran in Denver. Ultimately, with Tebow on the roster, no quarterback is safe.

But that isn't why Sanchez is doomed.

Sanchez is doomed because when Tebow steps on the field, things are going to happen. When Tebow steps on the field, it means Sanchez takes a backseat. Even if Tebow's playing h-back, fullback or running back with Sanchez on the field—which ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reported is a possibility according to Cimini—the focus of any type of success will be on Tebow.

How long can Sanchez handle that type of inconsistency?

Tebow has the experience and the skill set to step on the field on any given snap and make a play--regardless of how bad he was the play before.

Sanchez, meanwhile, is a guy whose strengths, as Slauson says, "heavy run, heavy play action and whipping out a deep ball every now and again."

Ironically enough, Tebow shares those same strengths with Sanchez and brings another element to the field because he can run as well--and not just in the Wildcat.

We've yet to see Sanchez make considerable strides since entering the league, and he struggles with consistency. Unlike Tebow, he has been given every chance in the world to succeed.

If the Jets don't come out firing on all cylinders—and a lot of this will have to do with what Tony Sparano does as offensive coordinator—the winds of change will be blowing in quickly from the fans and media.

And the only way to justify the trade of Tim Tebow is to actually use him.

The situation is a lose-lose for Sanchez, who is fighting for his job in his fourth year, regardless of what he and the Jets organization say.

Keep an eye on the play distribution early this season and don't surprised if there is more Tebow than expected.

When all is said and done, "Tebow Time" will ultimately cost Sanchez his spot in New York—even if Tebow doesn't become the full-time starter.
