Toronto Blue Jays' 4-Man Starting Pitching Rotation Working so Far

Bill FordApr 17, 2012

The Toronto Blue Jays have been successful so far this season with a four-man starting pitching rotation. The Blue Jays haven't needed a fifth starter yet because of the schedule that they have had.

With the days off that they have had, Toronto hasn't had any need for a fifth starter because the current pitching staff has had time to rest between starts.

Ricky Romero, Brandon Morrow, Henderson Alvarez and Kyle Drabek have been solid on the mound, with a few occasional bumps.

Toronto may need a fifth starter on Saturday, and the question is: Can the Blue Jays handle the game with the current four-man pitching rotation, or will they need a fifth starter?

With the schedule that they face, it is likely that Toronto will need to fill the pitching role on Saturday with a fifth starter. The next questions is: Who will be the fifth starter?

Joel Carreno is one possibility, but there are concerns about his previous performance during a start in the first week of the season. He gave up four runs in six innings against the Cleveland Indians.

Drew Hutchison is another possibility, and probably more likely. According to MLB.com, he is ranked as Toronto's No. 7 top prospect. Pitching for Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, he has given up just two earned runs in 11 innings this season.

Brett Cecil and Aaron Laffey are two other possibilities, but are highly unlikely due to less than adequate performances this year.

Hutchison is the likely candidate to get the call to fill the role of the fifth starter on Saturday if needed. If he does, he will probably have an impressive outing.
