WWE News: Latest on WWE's View on Daniel Bryan and the "Yes" Chants

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

Yes.

It is perhaps the most commonly used word in the English language, but in the crazy world of the WWE, it’s become an international sensation.

Ever since Daniel Bryan lost to Sheamus at WrestleMania 28, the arenas have been flooded with “Yes!” chants during WWE shows, even resulting in the creation of a new “Yes!” shirt that you can buy on wweshop.com.

While you would think that the popularity of such a simple word would be a great thing for the WWE, Bryan is a heel, and the crowd cheering for him every night has given the WWE some major headaches.

So, are they going to try to fix that “problem"? Let’s find out.

From PWInsider.com (via WrestleNewz.com):

"

As noted before, WWE officials feel the “Yes!” chants for Daniel Bryan will go away beginning this week or next now that the WrestleMania crowds are gone. Bryan’s promo on Friday’s SmackDown where he said people were mocking him was booked to present the chants as something negative towards him, when actually the chants are a sign of support from fans.

"

When watching SmackDown last Friday, I thought to myself, “Wow. How obvious is it that they’re trying to edit out the ‘Yes’ chants from the crowd?”

While I’m not a fan of that, I do have to admit that the WWE is in quite the pickle here because of that simple three-letter word.

If the “Yes!” chants continue, then it’s going to be hard to keep Bryan heel, but if the “Yes!” chants fade away, then it shouldn’t be a problem. Apparently, though, the WWE is trying to turn Bryan’s “Yes!” chants into a negative.

The only problem is that that’s going to be extremely hard to do.

If the crowd wants to chant “Yes!” throughout Raw, then that’s what it’s going to do, and there is going to be no way to edit it out. And it’s hard to imagine that these chants are simply going to go away because Bryan criticizes the fans for cheering him.

In fact, I imagine that the “Yes!” chants might get even louder if Bryan continues to acknowledge them. So, here’s what I’d do: Let the crowd reactions dictate what happens with Bryan.

This happened when CM Punk turned baby face last year and when Randy Orton turned face in early 2010. The crowd started cheering them, so the WWE turned them into good guys.

While I know that the WWE likely wants to keep Bryan heel because he just turned, there’s no point in trying to fight this week after week if the fans want to treat Bryan like a face.

If Bryan gets the reaction of a face, then so be it. If he gets the reaction of a heel, then so be it. If he gets the reaction of a tweener, then so be it.

I like Bryan best as a heel, but don’t insult our intelligence by badly piping in boos when what we really should be hearing are cheers or chants.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
