Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 Reasons Kevin Love Will Win MVP in 2013

Lindsey YoungApr 8, 2012

This year's MVP race may still be in discussion, but it doesn't mean we can't start looking ahead.

This season, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love signed a deal, put up huge numbers and broke records—all during a lockout-shortened schedule and with a roster littered by injuries.

A common opinion is that Love won't win the MVP this year because the Wolves have a losing record. While I still believe the UCLA alum deserves the award, I can't deny the general trend; it may not be Love's year.

Here are three reasons Love will win the NBA MVP in 2013.

Head Coach Rick Adelman Gains More Control in Year 2

1 of 3

When veteran NBA coach Rick Adelman signed on with the Wolves in September, he was, in essence, adopting a pre-existing team.

He brought in his own coaching staff, but Adelman didn't have much flexibility with the roster as it stood. Instead, the 65-year-old took this season to evaluate the current roster and make plans for next year.

In 2012-2013, Adelman will have built a team he feels confident in, a team that will support both Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio and fit in with Adelman's offensive scheme and overall vision.

As a previous coach for Portland, Golden State, Sacramento and Houston, Adelman holds an impressive track record and years of experience. He will certainly be Minnesota's ticket to the postseason—and Love's ticket to the MVP.

The Timberwolves Will Make the Playoffs

2 of 3

For the first time in several years, the Timberwolves were definitely on track to make the playoffs this season.

With the addition of Rick Adelman, Derrick Williams and Ricky Rubio, Minnesota generated plenty of hype and started winning games.

On March 10th, however, everything changed. Rookie point guard Rubio went down with an ACL tear, and things started going down from there.

Love continued to thrive, having the biggest month of his career in March, but the injury bug didn't stop with Rubio. The Wolves saw themselves lose JJ Barea, Michael Beasley, Nikola Pekovic and Luke Ridnour for various stretches, and the squad is losing steam.

Next year, however, they'll be back. Rubio's ACL surgery reportedly went well, and the PG continues to remain positive and plans on being ready for tipoff of next season. Hopefully, all injuries will be out of the system.

Considering the close games the Wolves have had while relying on only second and third-string players, there's no doubt they will make a postseason appearance in 2013.

If Love keeps up the numbers he's been delivering and Minnesota makes the playoffs... don't make me spell it out.

K-Love Wants It

3 of 3

This season couldn't have made it any clearer—Kevin Love is tired of being mediocre, and he's more serious than ever about being the best.

Coming out of the offseason, Love stepped onto the court 25 pounds lighter.

On Jan. 9th, he called himself the best power forward in the league.

On Jan. 25th, Love signed a four-year contract with Minnesota that includes a final year opt-out clause. Whether we like it or not, Wolves fans, Love wants to get serious about his game. If his current team doesn't improve, he's shown he won't feel guilty about walking away.

In March, Love delivered a 51-point game and solidified his rebounding and point totals.

The man wants nothing more than to win. If he doesn't win MVP in 2012, you can bet he'll be back next season with a vengeance.
