Masters 2012: 3 Superstars Who Choked Away a Chance at Glory
With the 2012 Masters tournament over and a new winner crowned, itโs time to look back and see which stars came into the tournament with high expectations but choked away their chance at glory.
The three following PGA pros slipped this weekend and in the process ruined their chances at Augusta in 2012. Hey, thereโs always next year.
Tiger Woods
After a wild weekend that saw the embattled PGA star lose his temper and play mediocre golf again, the premature talk of a return to form has been quelled.
Mediocre round after mediocre round reinforces the idea that Woods has lost his once dominant form and will likely never reacquire it. The Tiger of yesteryear is gone.
While solid play and solid finishes could start the slow mental rebuilding process, Woods may be too far gone to ever hope for a complete return to form.
Rory McIlroy
Augusta has become the Achilles heel for young golf star Rory McIlroy, choking away the lead at the 2011 Masters and having a third day that set him so far back that his score on Sunday doesnโt even matter.
While there is a good chance the young Irish golfer goes on to win another major this year, the legacy of his career will be made and broken on the course of the Masters.
There is still plenty of time in the young manโs career for redemption, but Augusta is taking the early rounds of this fight easily.
Vijay Singh
After entering the weekend at two under par and having a good edge on most of the field, Vijay Singhโs train came off the track as he couldnโt get over the hump.
While the older star stayed close to par all weekend, he was never able to hit the shots that put him ahead. It really did look as if time had passed the former star by.
The finish was by no means something to be ashamed of, but it certainly was not the two-day performance he was looking for coming into the weekend at the 2012 Masters.
