Stan Van Gundy vs. Dwight Howard: Nobody Wins in This War

Ernest ShepardApr 7, 2012

The condition of the Orlando Magic is currently on life support after one of the most awkward moments in sports history. Thursday, April 5, 2012 should go down as the day the wrecking ball swung mightily on the Magic franchise. One potentially career-ending press conference has effectively finalized the fate of the Orlando Magic season.

Stan Van Gundy is no longer a wanted man on the sidelines according to someone in the Magic front office.

For those who are wondering who is exactly in charge on the Magic sideline should be scratching their noggins. The answer is: I don’t know.

It is not Van Gundy, who somehow left his heart on his sleeve. He finally sounded like a betrayed father who witnessed one of his most successful children stab him in the back one final time.

It is not Dwight Howard: the child with million-dollar talent, but remains a player who uses a two-cent finisher.

What has happened to the leaders of the Magic franchise? They have been rendered silent and clueless to anything that has resembled professionalism. It is almost clear that maturity has been lacking in the Magic locker room when its two major factors are stuck in this pitiful battle.

Nobody wins here in this war. Not Van Gundy, not Howard, nor do the fans. The fans clearly lose out here.

They have watched their team and had some title aspirations with both the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat struggling. They have put up with Howard performing more flip-flops than the famous Chicago-based Jesse White Tumblers.

Now this latest black eye: Van Gundy revealing his soul.

If it were up to me, I would do nothing until after the season. I would allow the biggest collapse in Orlando Magic history to happen.

That way I would have no qualms about relieving Van Gundy from his misery and banish Howard to some version of NBA purgatory. It would not be Brooklyn. Howard for Kevin Love and draft picks, perfect!

This would provide as punishment to both for ruining a once promising season.
