WWE's Best Match of the Week: Mark Henry vs. CM Punk on Monday Night Raw

Drake OzApr 5, 2012

WrestleMania 28 was a phenomenal pay-per-view that featured three matches ranging from great to amazing.

As good as Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk and The Rock vs. John Cena were, though, it was The Undertaker vs. Triple H in a Hell in a Cell match that stole the show.

But on Monday Night Raw, the show was stolen by Punk and Mark Henry.

For the second time in three weeks, the World’s Strongest Man was placed into a match at the top of the second hour with one of the WWE’s top stars. It was John Cena a couple of weeks ago (in a very good match, I might add), but it was Punk on Monday.

Although Punk/Henry was definitely made better by the insanely hot Miami crowd, I have to give both of these men credit for putting on a fantastic performance.

Henry isn’t known for being a great in-ring competitor, but he and Punk had a ton of chemistry, and when that was combined with a great live crowd, it resulted in a stellar match.

Some of my favorite spots from this bout were Punk’s huge DDT on Henry, Punk’s big top-rope elbow drop and Henry reserving Punk’s bulldog attempt by tossing him over the top rope, resulting in the count-out victory.

The back-and-forth action between these two was extremely well done, with Henry doing an awesome job performing as the ruthless heel and Punk doing equally as well as the smaller baby face trying to topple the giant.

These two told a story, and any time a match tells a story, it usually results in a great bout that is wildly entertaining for the fans in the crowd and watching at home.

I have to give some major props to Henry, who’s delivered some really solid matches as of late and is helping shed his image as someone who “can’t wrestle.”

Most of his World Heavyweight Championship run was highlighted by bad matches with The Big Show, but he’s proving that, when given the right opponent, he’s actually very worthy of competing in the main event scene.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
