Miami Football: 3 Early Standouts from Spring Practice

Randy ChambersJun 3, 2018

The Miami Hurricanes can finally begin to focus on football, as spring practice is in full effect.

They've been sweating it out the last few weeks as they prepare for the spring game that takes place on April 14.

Spring practice is a time for certain players to step up and make an impact on this football team.

Miami only returns four starters on the offensive side of the ball, so for them, they may need several different players to take their game to another level for their season to be successful. These could be starters from a year ago or players at the bottom of the depth chart who are ready to make a difference.

As the Hurricanes inch closer to the spring game, here are three players who have stood out in practice.

WR Rashawn Scott

With so many players leaving this team on the offensive side of the ball, a wide receiver stepping up is a great sign for Al Golden and company.

Rashawn Scott is a sophomore wide receiver who missed the majority of his freshman season with a shoulder injury.

He only caught one pass last season but is really shining in spring practice.

"He’s making a lot of progress." head coach Al Golden said to scout.com. "What you saw here today is what we see in camp every day. He’s working hard, and it’s starting to show up in game situations like this."

In one of the scrimmages, he caught five passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Scott wasn't really thought about when the spring first kicked off, but with his recent performances, the former 3-star recruit from Melbourne, FL may see some solid action this year.

LB Denzel Perryman

Denzel Perryman had a great season last year, finishing second on the team in tackles.

But many believe we have yet to see the best of this guy, as he switches to middle linebacker this season and the transition is quickly paying off in practice.

“He’s our most explosive tackler. He’s got a suddenness about him. He brings his feet,” Golden said, according to The Sun-Sentinel. “He’s got a whole ‘nother gear that we haven’t seen and we’ve got to get out of him.”

Perryman is only entering his sophomore season, so obviously we have yet to see the best of him.

But if he can help improve a defense that was ranked sixth in the ACC last season and add some physicality to it, the Hurricanes will be much better off this season.

QB Ryan Williams

With quarterback Stephen Morris injured until the fall kicks in, Memphis-transfer Ryan Williams has really been stepping it up in his absence.

He's making every throw on the football field and looks like he could be the one leading this team this season.

“He had good command,” Golden said, according to The Miami Herald. “He distributed the ball well. His corner routes I thought he threw really well for us. He did a good job in the naked [bootleg] game, for such a big guy to be able to get out of the pocket and throw it as accurately as he did. And he ran it well.

“He looked like he had been through it before.”

Morris will still have a say in this competition when he comes back, but it looks like it's anybody's race at this point. Things will get really interesting later on in the year.
