WWE News: Offering Free Rehab to Maven Proves WWE Isn't All About Money

Mike ChiariJun 6, 2018

After being arrested in Florida for allegedly doctor shopping to get potent pain pills, former WWE star Maven is in hot water. Thanks to his old employer, however, he may be able to get back on track sooner than expected.

According to TMZ, the WWE has offered Maven free drug rehabilitation as part of the company's Former Talent Rehab program, which has been a WWE fixture for quite some time now. It is well documented that Scott Hall has utilized the program several times, despite the fact he has ultimately been unsuccessful.

Offering a former star rehab is old hat for the WWE, but it is always nice to see them offer a helping hand. Many seem to think that everything the WWE and Vince McMahon do is due to money, and while that is the case most of the time, trying to get former WWE stars on the road to recovery is a noble act that deserves to be applauded.

Some will probably say that the WWE has ulterior motives, and in some way that could be accurate. I'm sure McMahon doesn't hate the good publicity he gets from making public offers to troubled former stars, but if a good deed results in something positive for the entity that is doing it, it doesn't change the fact that it's still a good deed.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of another company that offers this type of service to former employees. Part of the reason why McMahon does this may be because he feels as though the wrestling culture has led former wrestlers to drug addiction, but at least he is trying to do something to rectify it.

Maven won the first ever Tough Enough competition in 2001 and was a member of the WWE roster until 2005. He was largely used as enhancement talent during his time with the company, but he did have a few memorable moments. He held the Hardcore Championship three times, but his signature moment came when he eliminated The Undertaker in the 2002 Royal Rumble, only to be pummeled by The Deadman immediately after.

After being released from the WWE in 2005, Maven had several ventures in television with the most notable being that of an exercise and wellness expert on Home Shopping Network's HSN Today. Despite seemingly landing on his feet, Maven now has quite a battle on his hands.

He is reportedly facing up to five years in prison if he is convicted of the crime, but just as importantly, he needs to get his life back on track. There is nothing that the WWE can do if he refuses treatment, but if he allows the company to help him out, hopefully he can put this whole ordeal behind him eventually.

Getting Maven on the road to recovery would be a feather in the WWE's cap. More importantly, it would help a former employee in need. Maven may have been unspectacular during his time with the company, but he put in five years of good service. The WWE would be doing the right thing in returning the favor.

McMahon may be a cutthroat business man, but gestures like this tell me that he truly cares about the talent and has no problem using the WWE's wealth and power for the greater good.
