An Eye for an Eye: Randy Orton Steals from CM Punk

Daris BrownJan 20, 2009

All hardcore wrestling fans know that the best wrestlers are those who are able to pull a little bit of their personal life into their character. One of the best examples of this is the ruthless Randy Orton.

Known as the "legend killer," Randy does whatever it takes to get what he wants, shows no mercy, and is a rebel without a cause. But more importantly, he is also very temperamental.

As seen on Monday night, when Randy punted the owner of the WWE into next week when he was ordered to apologize, Randy is out of control both on screen and off.

But this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, as Orton was acting out long before making his WWE debut. In fact, he was even dishonorably discharged and placed in military prison when he went AWOL, TWICE, in his only year spent with the Marines.

This leads us to his WWE antics. In a recent interview with GameDaily, Orton revealed that he was completely frustrated with the music the WWE has selected for him, stating, "I hated it from the first day I heard it," referring to the "Hey, nothing you can say," entrance music.

So he decided to bring his own music to the WWE. That's when "This Fire Burns" by Killswitch Engage found its way to Raw. Vinnie Mac bought the rights, played it for two weeks, and then turned the song over to the debuting CM Punk.

This didn't sit well with the "legend killer." He brought the song to the WWE. He felt it fit him better than any other song. And he was not happy with some minor league independent star coming in and stealing his stuff.

Randy Orton was hot, telling creative, "listen, I've been champ for six months. Throw me a bone. The joke's over." Nobody was laughing.

So Orton plotted his revenge and came up with the perfect plan. Now all he needed was time. That's when he took advantage of an opportunity that appeared to be bleak.

When Randy Orton re-injured his collarbone in a motorcycle accident, his life would never be the same. Upon returning to Raw, Orton was different. It was more than the fire burning in his eyes; there had been a transformation.

During his time off Orton took upon himself to do as much harm to CM Punk as he could. He stole from Punk—only this time it wasn't a song, but his identity.

On his return back to Raw, Randy revealed that both arms were completely covered in various tattoos. "A-ha," he said to himself. Punk wants to steal my song; I will steal his look.

Wrestling is not solely about a wrestler's in-ring ability and mic skills; they are also judged by their looks. They have to look the part. Just as you won't see two people on the same show using the pedigree as a finisher, you shouldn't see two people with the same look.

Randy Orton's brilliant plan to weed out CM Punk has begun. First it's the arm tattoos, and soon he will have "Not Straight-Edge" tatted across his stomach.

Add that with the Coke tatt that will cover the tat that's covering his USMC tatt, and you've got identity theft completed.

But don't think of it as distasteful or mean. All it is is an eye for an eye.
