WrestleMania 29: Top 10 Dream Matches Fans Want to See
WrestleMania 28 is now a thing of the past, so you know what that means: We can now look forward to WrestleMania 29.
After seeing The Rock take on John Cena in arguably the biggest, most highly-anticipated match of all time this year, the WWE now finds itself in a tricky little situation: The fans are going to want to see a huge WrestleMania match or two every year from here on out.
The good news? It's possible.
With the WWE heading to New Jersey for next year's WrestleMania and rumors floating around about some big-time names competing there, expectations are already high for the WWE's biggest pay-per-view of the year.
We want dream matches, and we want them in 2013.
But which ones would we like to see? Here are the top 10 dream matches we want to witness at WrestleMania 29.
Note: Although the title says "dream matches," I'm talking about realistic dream matches that could actually happen. So, don't expect to see a match on here that features someone who's no longer alive or is retired for good (like Shawn Michaels). Also, no Cena/Lesnar here because I think that'll happen before then.
10. The Rock vs. Triple H
1 of 10One of the most underrated rivalries in WWE history is Triple H vs. The Rock.
This rivalry doesn't get anywhere near the credit that some of the great past WWE feuds get, but these two had some classic battles back in the day, including that great Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam in 1998.
While The Rock vs. Triple H in 2013 doesn't have quite the appeal of The Rock vs. John Cena in 2011/12, it's another potential feud that I've seen a number of fans express interest in seeing.
I like the idea of this rivalry because, unlike Rock/Cena, having either of these guys win isn't going to bury future talent at the biggest pay-per-view of the year, and the verbal war between the two, as well as the match, would likely be pretty damn good.
If the WWE chose to go this route, I wouldn't be complaining.
9. Randy Orton vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
2 of 10Much of the chatter surrounding this potential match has died down, but for a while, there was a lot of talk about "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. Randy Orton.
Yet, the similarities between "The Viper" and "The Texas Rattlesnake" are certainly still there.
Aside from the obvious nickname connection, both men have managed to develop huge fanbases as baby faces despite the fact that their actions are often more heelish (or at least in that tweener role). Of course, they've also gotten over in large part due to their finishers.
The Stunner is arguably the most popular move in wrestling history, and the RKO gets as big a pop as any finisher in WWE today.
You throw Austin in a match with Orton, and I'm sure the crowd would eat it up.
8. The Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho
3 of 10One of the weirdest pieces of wresting trivia ever: The Undertaker and Chris Jericho have only faced each other in one singles match. Ever.
Crazy, huh?
That bout took place on an episode of Friday Night SmackDown in late 2009, and if I recall correctly, it was basically randomly thrown together and not part of any type of real feud between the two.
Well, I think it's safe to say that we need to get the first extended feud between The Undertaker and Chris Jericho, and that it needs to happen at WrestleMania 29.
In recent years, The Undertaker has beaten established veterans at WrestleMania, which is probably a smart move because it prevents him from beating young talent.
Why not continue that tradition?
Jericho can target Undertaker for failing to recognize him as part of the "Era" (along with Triple H and Shawn Michaels), and after all, I think we can agree that Undertaker/Jericho would be both a great feud and a great match.
7. Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk
4 of 10When CM Punk cut his worked shoot promo last summer, he called himself "a Paul Heyman guy" and reminded us that someone else was "a Paul Heyman guy": Brock Lesnar.
Now, given that Lesnar just returned to the WWE this week, the potential for a battle between two Paul Heyman guys is obviously there.
Punk didn't debut in the WWE until long after Lesnar was gone, so it could be a fantastic feud to see these two battle it out for a WrestleMania feud...and to throw Heyman into the mix.
You have Punk on one side, Lesnar on the other side and Heyman in the middle, unsure of which guy he wants to support the most.
If Punk and Lesnar cross paths now that "The Next Big Thing" is back in the WWE, I think that anticipation for this potential feud will definitely pick up steam.
6. The Rock vs. CM Punk
5 of 10On this week's episode of Raw, The Rock revealed that he had a vision that he would one day become the WWE Champion.
And who, might I ask, is the WWE Champion at the moment? Oh yeah, it's CM Punk.
Maybe it's just me, but I saw The Rock's promo about becoming the WWE Champion as a possible foreshadowing of a WWE title feud with Punk whenever we see The Rock back in the WWE.
Punk has been very outspoken about The Rock since his return, and the WWE definitely teased this feud on Monday's Raw.
I don't know about you, but I'd love to see this rivalry go down because the promos between two of the greatest talkers in wrestling history would be nothing short of fantastic, and the actual wrestling would probably be pretty solid, too.
5. Brock Lesnar vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
6 of 10At WrestleMania XX in 2004, Brock Lesnar faced Goldberg in one of the most disappointing WrestleMania matches ever.
The special guest referee during that match? "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
Austin vs. Lesnar was the match that the fans really wanted to see, but everyone knew that Lesnar was bolting the WWE shortly after WrestleMania XX to pursue an NFL career, resulting in a stinker of a match.
Yet, that doesn't mean that some people out there don't still want to see Austin take on Lesnar, even though Austin is nearly 50 years old and had to retire because of a serious neck injury.
I think just about everyone would be disappointed with any "Stone Cold" match at this point, but the hype surrounding a possible match between one of the biggest wrestling stars ever and the biggest draw in MMA history (combined with all the history between the two) is something that will make this match talked about for the foreseeable future.
4. The Undertaker vs. John Cena
7 of 10John Cena has feuded with just about every top WWE star at some point over the last several years.
But one major star that Cena hasn't feuded with since becoming the star he is today is none other than The Undertaker.
I believe that we haven't seen Undertaker vs. Cena in a singles match (or any match for that matter) since 2003, and this is a potentially epic showdown between two of the biggest names in wrestling history.
Though just about everyone believes that Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania will never end, Cena is the one guy who might make fans think otherwise.
Cena rarely loses clean, and the thought of him potentially ending the most impressive streak in wrestling history is enough to sell WrestleMania 29 in itself.
3. The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar
8 of 10Following Brock Lesnar's fight at UFC 121 in October 2010, he and The Undertaker (who was in attendance at the show) had a shocking face-to-face showdown in which Undertaker stopped Lesnar and said, "You wanna do it?"
Of course, this immediately led to all kinds of speculation that Undertaker was challenging Lesnar to another wrestling match, likely at WrestleMania.
These two have all sorts of history with each other from their time together in the WWE, and there's no doubt that that appeal of another potential Lesnar/Undertaker match is still there, even roughly a decade after these two first stepped in a ring with each other.
Obviously, you don't need me to tell you what type of impact this match would have on professional wrestling or the WrestleMania 29 buyrate.
Let's just say this: It would be huge.
2. The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar
9 of 10Let the rumors begin.
On Monday's Raw, The Rock cut what will likely be his last WWE promo for a while, but indicated that he would be back in the relatively near future. On the same show, Brock Lesnar made his return to the WWE.
Coincidence? Maybe, but maybe not.
It was 10 years ago that The Rock and Lesnar faced off in that monumental match at SummerSlam in 2002, and there's a lot of speculation that we could see Rock/Lesnar at SummerSlam in 2012 (for their "10-year anniversary") or perhaps even at WrestleMania 29.
Whatever the case may be, this is a potentially epic match that could very well rival all the hype and anticipation that we got from The Rock vs. Cena this year.
1. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. CM Punk
10 of 10"Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. CM Punk is a match that has been in the making since last summer when Punk wore a Stone Cold shirt while cutting that epic worked shoot promo of his.
Since that night, Punk has begun to remind a lot of people of Austin because of his rebellious spirit and his fast-rising popularity as an antihero.
Speculation surrounding a potential Austin/Punk match, however, probably wouldn't be nearly as high as it is currently is if it wasn't for Punk and Austin themselves.
These two have teased a feud and even a match at WrestleMania 29 on Twitter on a number of occasions, and Austin has indeed expressed interest in returning to the WWE for one match with Punk.
The appeal behind this feud is obvious: Two fantastic mic workers, two huge stars and two great rebels.
While Austin may not be in tip-top ring shape anymore, I think all the other great things we could get out of this feud make it the No. 1 dream match for WrestleMania 29.
Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
