Wrestlemania Results: 4 Matches That Didn't Live Up to the Hype
Wrestlemania 28 had a lot of hype surrounding it this year, and for the most part, it delivered. Classics such as CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho and Undertaker vs. Triple H mesmerized the masses of people who viewed this historic event.
But, with every wrestling match that lived up to its billing, there were several matches that did not live up to the hype. That is not to say they weren't good matches, but they simply had an incredible amount of hype behind it, and it simply did not measure up.
Here are four matches that did not live up to the hype at Wrestlemania.
Primo and Epico vs. Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd vs. the Usos
1 of 4I know there was not technically a ton of "hype" behind this match, but the dark match for the WWE Tag Team Championships was free for everybody to watch.
When something is free, it creates hype among fans who are preparing to watch it. It was disappointing that it was not a fatal four way match, as I believe the use of Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks better suited them for this match, instead of their brief appearance backstage.
I hyped this match up a lot because I thought there would be more high flying action than there actually was. Sure, Justin Gabriel hit his couple of spots. Yeah, that spot on the top rope where Tyson Kidd brought down one of the Usos and Primo was pretty cool.
I expected more high flying spots though, and that's why this falls on the list. I guess I just have crazy expectations.
Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan
2 of 4The World Heavyweight Championship match led off the pay-per-view with a ton of buzz surrounding Sheamus and Daniel Bryan. Many people were excited to see this match, as Bryan is a technical wizard and Sheamus is a talented big man.
That buzz lasted all of 18 seconds. Yes, 18 seconds and there was a new champion.
Although I was surprised and not really that upset with the way the match was booked, it left millions of fans wanting more. These are two of the more popular wrestlers in the WWE and they were showcased for less than a minute.
The match failed to live up to the hype, but big ups for Sheamus becoming the new champion.
Team Johnny vs. Team Teddy
3 of 4Other than the constant talk of The Rock versus John Cena leading up to Wrestlemania, a ton of emphasis was put on the Team Johnny versus Team Teddy match. With that, came a match that failed to live up to the hype.
First off, this match should have been an elimination tag team match. I know that time constraints probably did not allow for this, but it would have been so much more exciting.
Second off, the match was pretty short anyway, despite there being 12 superstars and ringside valets all over the place. I figured this fight would have been an all-out brawl.
Just think, the 12 wrestlers all duking it out in various parts of ringside. Aksana and Vickie Guerrero having a catfight. Brie and Nikki Bella having a catfight. Teddy Long and John Laurinaitis in a shoving match at ringside. Hornswoggle and Michael Cole getting in a sissy fight.
Instead, we got what we saw.
The Rock vs. John Cena
4 of 4I will probably get a lot of flak for this but bear with me.
This match had over a year's worth of hype behind it. That's right, over 365 days worth of hype was behind this match and somehow it still did not live up to the hype.
The electricity in the air was magical. The fans made it more special. When it came down to the match, it was kind of troubling though.
Although the Rock won, he was dominated for the most part. He had a few points where he had the upper hand, but I remember looking to my friend at one point and saying, "Even if the Rock wins this match, they still booked him kind of weak."
Perhaps no match could have lived up to the hype that The Rock versus John Cena brought, but as of right now, I believe this match did not live up to the hype. It had some nice spots, but it had me wanting to see a little more.
