NFL Rumors: Vikings Reportedly Want Bill Parcells to Coach in Minnesota

Knox BardeenApr 4, 2012

Could there be more suitors for retired head coach Bill Parcells than just the New Orleans Saints?

A New York Post article on Wednesday claims Minnesota owner Zygi Wilf is going to try to convince Parcells to come coach in Minnesota instead of New Orleans.

Why the Minnesota job might be more attractive to Parcells than heading to New Orleans

1. New Orleans is just a one-year gig. The Saints are, and will be for some time, Sean Payton's team. Parcells is just a fill-in, nothing more. He's an incredibly good fill-in, but his stay in New Orleans would be for just one season. The Minnesota job would be long term. If Parcells really wants to get back into coaching, long term is better than fill-in.

2. Parcells would be running Payton's team using Payton's schemes with Payton's players. In Minnesota, Parcells would have complete control. The report states that Wilf wants Parcells to oversee football operations and coach the team. This would be Parcells' baby.

3. The report also said Wilf told Parcells to "name his price." Money talks in this league, even for someone as seasoned and accomplished as Parcells.

Why Parcells to Minnesota isn't going to fly

1. If he chooses to coach in New Orleans, Parcells would just be doing Payton a favor. Parcells has been retired from coaching since 2006 and hasn't had a job in football since 2010. I find it hard to fathom that Parcells could change his life path from being coaxed into helping an old colleague out for one season to taking over a huge rebuilding project in Minnesota.

2. Speaking of rebuilding, the Vikings were 3-13 last season and have a lot of work to do before they can be molded into a playoff team. The Saints, on the flip side of that coin, are Super Bowl ready. Parcells has two Super Bowl rings with two different teams. No other coach in NFL history has three rings with three different teams. I can see where that would be appealing to chase.

3. I'm not saying Parcells is over the hill, but the New York Post report did say Parcells had wondered if the game had "passed me by." I don't think that's necessarily true, but as he will turn 71 years old this season, would Parcells rather just win now and ride off into the sunset?
