Family Affair IV: The Guerreros

Jabot SingleterryJan 19, 2009

If I had to describe the Guerrero family in just one word it would have to be "dynamic." They had this dynamic style of wrestling that just exploded worldwide. And they're legacy all began with the patriarch Gory Guerrero.

Gory Guerrero

One of the early pioneers of lucha libre wrestling in Mexico, Gory Guerrero was born on Jan. 11, 1921 in Ray, Ariz.

Trained by Diablo Velasco, he made his debut in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1937. He made his debut in the Mexico City promotion, Empresa Mexicana de la Lucha Libre in 1943.  He was named "Rookie of the Year" and won two titles in 1945, one of them being the National Welterweight title (which he never lost).

Known for his rough technical, he is the innovator of the Gory Special and the Camel Clutch or known in Mexico as the La de a Caballo.

Retiring in the 1980s, Gory died at the age of 69 in 1990 in El Paso, Texas.

He's left his legacy though his children Chavo, Mando, Hector and Eddie.

Chavo Guerrero Sr.

The eldest of the Guerrero boys, Chavo was born on Jan. 7, 1949.

Debuting in 1972, during his career Chavo would feud with Roddy Piper in California and in Japan over lighter-weight titles.

Normally teaming with his brothers, Hector and Mando, they gained exposure when they competed in the AWA on ESPN during the 1980s.

While in the AWA, Chavo would team with Mando to feud with Badd Company (Paul Diamond and Pat Tanaka) over the AWA world Tag Team Championship.

He would join up with his son Chavo Guerrero Jr. to feud against hid bother Eddie Guerrero. Before being released by the WWE, Chavo would win the Cruiserweight Championship.

Mando Guerrero

Born on July 7, 1952, Mando began wrestling in 1974 and primarily competed in California's NWA promotion, but is most known for competing in the AWA with his brothers, while feuding with Badd Company over the AWA World Tag Team Championship.

In the late 1980s, he was a trainer for the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling promotion; one the women he trained was Ivory. He got fed up of the girls not taking it seriously and put one of the women in a submission hold and made her cry.

He currently applied to the WWE for a road agent position.

Hector Guerrero

Born on Oct. 1, 1954, Hector was trained under his father and debuted in 1973. While wrestling in California he would team up with his brothers.

In the mid-1980s, Hector wrestled for the NWA. He teamed with "The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez as "The Latin Connection" until Fernandez turned on him and Rick Rude and Paul Jones.

Hector made the transition to the WWE as the very unsuccessful costumed "Gobbledy Gooker" as he danced in the ring with "Mean" Gene Okerlund at Survivor Series, the fans didn't connect to the character as planned and booed him.

Later in his career he faced his brother Eddie in WCW and lost to him on an episode of WCW Saturday Night. He unsuccessfully challenged 2 Cold Scorpio for the ECW televison Championship,

He helped LAX win the TNA World Tag Team Championship in 2008. He now works as a road agent and as a TNA Spanish color commentator.

Eddie Guerrero

The youngest brother, born on Oct. 9, 1967. The most popular of the Guerrero clan. They're are not enough words to describe Eddie Guerrero, but I'll just say, "tremendous wrestler".

Eddie was trained by his brothers and got his start in 1987. Eddie gained notice in Mexico by teaming up with his friend Art Barr (innovator of the Frog Splash).

They were known as The Pain of Terror and were argubly the most hated Tag Team in luche libra history. Both were contacted by Paul Heyman to wrestle for him in ECW.

However, Art Barr died before they could join, from that point on, Eddie used Barr's frogsplash as a tribute to him.

From 1993 to 1996, Eddie wrestled as Black Tiger II in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Teaming with The Great Sasuke, he won the NJPW Junior Heavyweight Super Grade Tag League Championship in 1993.

Eddie won the ECW Television Championship from 2 Cold Scorpio in his debut match, he went on to have a series of match with good friend Dean Malenko, before they both signed to World Championship Wrestling.

While in WCW he won the United States Championship and the Cruiserweight Championship on two different occasions.

He formed two stables while in WCW, Latino World Order and The Filthy Animals. Once Vince Russo got fired, and Kevin Sullivan became WCW booker, Eddie asked and was released, along with friends Dean Malenko, Chris Benoit, and Perry Saturn.

They all came to the WWE in 2000. Eddie Guerrero pursued Chyna but she turned him down everytime, until she after WrestleMania 2000 when she told him she couldn't resist his Latino Heat.

During his first run there, he'd win the Intercontinental title, until being released three days later after being arrested for drunk driving.

He eventually returned, and really took off. Winning numerous titles such as, The WWE Tag Team Championship, Intercontinental Championship, European title and the United States Championship.

But none were bigger than, the WWE Championship, which he won from Brock Lesnar at No Way Out, he defended the title against Kurt Angle and retained it at WrestleMania XX.

Eddie died on Novenber 13, 2005, he was 38. He is survived by his daughters and wife Vickie Guerrero, current Smackdown General Manager.

Chavo Guerrero, Jr.

The first third generation Guerrero was born on October 20, 1970 and made his wrestling debut in 1994. While in WCW he was involved in a storyline which involved his fixation with a hobby horse named "Pepe."

Eventually Pepe would be thrown into a woodchipper by Norman Smiley. Chavo was used in humorous storylines in WCW. Chavo would gain success in WCW around 2000 and 2001, when he was in a memorable feud with "Sugar" Shane Helms.

In WWE, he teamed with his uncle Eddie and won WWE Tag Team Gold on two separate occasions. On August 26, 2004, he suffered a legit concussion after Billy Kidman's Shooting Star Press. He returned and won the Cruiserweight title on different occasions.

On June 30, 2005, he denounced his Hispanic heritage and repackaged himself as a white American named Kerwin White. He was defeated by Shelton Benjamin at Unforgiven. When Eddie died, he dropped the Kerwin White gimmick.

He would continue the Guerrero legacy as himself and on the Smackdown tribute show, he defeated Eddie's rival, JBL, even "lying, cheating, and stealing" in the process.

After months of helping Rey Mysterio retain the World Heavyweight Championship, he would cost him the title at the Great American Bash, claiming Rey was living off the Guerrero legacy. He eventually would take Rey out by "injuring" his knee.

Chavo captured his fourth Cruiserweight title in a Open Cruiserweight Match in February 2007, entering last to win the belt. He wouldn't lose the belt until July at the Great American Bash.

Chavo was the last person to talk to Chris Benoit before the Benoit tragedy.

In the beginning of 2008, Chavo return from a suspension due to the WWE Wellness Policy, to feud with CM Punk over the ECW Championship. After several matches, Chavo would win the ECW Championship in a No Disqualification match after interference from Edge.

Right now, Chavo can be seen fetching coffee for his aunt Vickie on Smackdown. Chavo has been married to his wife Susan since 1998, they have two sons, who hopefully will continue the Guerrero legacy in the future.

Vickie Guerrero

Born in 1968, Vickie debuted making special appearances, during Eddie's feud with Rey Mysterio. She became the widow of Eddie Guerrero on November 13, 2005, when Eddie died of heart failure.

Vickie would become an on screen figure in late 2006, coming on as Chavo Guerrero's manager, they began a feud with Chris Benoit and challenged for his United States Championship, but Chavo never won the title.

In 2007,Theodore Long suffered a "heart attack" in the ring during his wedding to Kristal. The following week, Mr.McMahon named Vickie the new General Manager of Smackdown. Since then, Vickie has been ruling Smackdown.

She's become a big heel, feuding with Rey Mysterio, The Undertaker and currently Triple H. She's famously known for yelling, "Excuse me!", when the fans over crowd her with boo's.

She was married to Eddie from April 24, 1990 to his death on November 13, 2005. She's the mother of their daughters, Shaul Marie (born 1990) and Sherilyn Amber (born 1995). She's also stepmother to Eddie's youngest daughter, Kaylie Marie (born 2002)

High flying, innovative, and entertaining lucha libre wrestlers. They lied, they cheated and they stole our hearts in the ring. I can only hope that the great Guerrero legacy will continue on decades from now.
