NBA Draft 2012: Anthony Davis Proves He Is a Worthy No. 1 Pick
Anthony Davis has left no doubt in anyone’s mind that he should be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft this June.
His play during the NCAA Tournament was absolutely stellar and he proved he will impact a game in a number of ways, most notably on defense.
The Kentucky star is also one of the rare “sure-thing” prospects that only come around every few years.
Unlike say Andrea Bargnani or Andrew Bogut, Davis is cut from the same cloth as LeBron James, Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard and the numerous other No. 1 picks that were nearly unanimously agreed upon to become superstars upon entering the league.
Just look at his body of work during one season with the Wildcats.
The 6’10”, 220-pound prospect averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and a whopping 4.7 blocks per contest while constantly forcing opponents to alter their approach in the paint or force up bad jumpers.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, during the tournament, Davis altered a ridiculous 18.2 percent of shots against Kentucky's opponents inside the arc. Not only did he control just the paint, but dominated anyone who dared step past the three-point line.
The 19-year-old Most Outstanding Player award winner didn’t even help KU win the championship with his offense; he scored just six points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field.
That will come with practice and time, which will help him develop into an all-around force capable of putting up huge numbers and dominating on both ends of the floor.
When the Ping-Pong balls are bouncing during the draft lottery later this spring, expect every team in attendance to be hoping to win the grand prize — the right to select Anthony Davis No. 1 overall.
