The Rock vs. John Cena: Why The Rock Beating John Cena Was Brilliant for WWE

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

While The Rock defeating John Cena at WrestleMania 28 was shocking to many, WWE fans should be thrilled with the final outcome.

Even with The Rock returning after an eight-year layoff, Cena was largely expected to come away with the victory.

But, the reality is, Cena will get another chance for the title in no time at all because, well, he's John Cena. The Rock's victory opens up a wealth of intrigue, starting with what Cena will do in the immediate future. It creates considerable buzz and will be giving us something to talk about for a long time, and that's great for the business.

The WWE has been criticized in the past for straying from the blueprint in favor of the upset and the turmoil that comes along with it. Cena's defeat opens up the WWE for more criticism along those lines.

But there is a difference between Cena's defeat and some of the other mind-numbing matches in the past: In short, this was a great battle, and it doesn't significantly change the landscape.

Cena and The Rock gave us a spectacular match. It wasn't the most technically sound, but it overflowed with energy, electricity and pure star power. Again, it gave us something to talk about, and then stunned us when Cena failed to kick out at the end.

I've blasted the WWE for failing to create a clear superpower in the past, constantly holding back its emerging stars. But this was different. This was one of the greats battling with another great. In the end, it really didn't matter who won. Both The Rock and Cena delivered—that's what mattered. And their match was one of the few that boosted WrestleMania 28 after a deplorable start.

We should not be complaining about who beat who. The Rock vs. John Cena was ultimately what we want all along: simply, a great match. There have been plenty of disappointments in big matches throughout the years, but this was far from a disappointment. We should be ecstatic because it shows the WWE still has the capability of creating greatness, even with its various flaws.

Before complaining about Cena's defeat, ask yourself this: Was The Rock vs. John Cena worth the price of admission?
