WWE WrestleMania 28 Results: Grading Each Match at the Latest Pay-Per-View
Last night's WrestleMania was one that had more high and low points than any event I can remember. Some of the matches blew us away, while others fell flat.
The night featured exactly the number of matches we knew about heading into the event, where I expected WWE to add at least one in there for good measure.
In this slideshow, I will take a look at each match and grade them based on the criteria of excitement, energy of the crowd and execution.
Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus (D-)
1 of 8The only reason this did not get an F is because it had the end result which I wanted going into the match. Sheamus came away with the World Title, but it was not the way I think he expected his WrestleMania moment to go down.
The match opened the show, which is not always a bad sign for title matches, as it is a chance to get the crowd excited right off the bat, but this match did not do that.
After Bryan gave his usual pre-match kiss to A.J., he turned around and got hit with the Brogue Kick to lose his title, in what might have been the fastest title loss in WrestleMania history.
Considering Sheamus won the Rumble this year, I expected WWE to give him a monster push going into Mania, but that did not happen and this match was given less attention than the IC title match.
Kane vs Randy Orton (B-)
2 of 8This was a decent match, but I expected a much more brutal encounter given the history of both men's well-documented love of torturing their opponents during matches.
While it was not the brawl I expected, I was pleased with how the match went down and the result. Kane getting the win probably shocked a lot of people, but I feel it was the right move.
WWE couldn't have a guy who they brought back with a reinvigorated gimmick and have him lose to Cena and then Orton in two straight feuds. He needed to come out on top—beating the Viper proved he had what it takes.
Orton put on a great show, and in the end he and Kane had a match which turned out better than I had expected going into the night.
If Kane keeps this momentum going, then I could see a Kane/Sheamus feud for the title down the line.
Big Show vs Cody Rhodes (B-)
3 of 8This match was one which I did not have much of an opinion about heading into the night. I was not sure how it would go, who would win or what the quality would be like.
I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised on all fronts. Big Show won the match with a decisive victory, which helped cement him as IC champion, while also breaking his losing streak at WrestleMania.
Rhodes put on a good match, but I think he may have pulled something when Show hit him with a spear in mid-air, because he seemed to grab his groin right away and seemed to give some sort of sign to the ref to signal that he needed the match to end.
I hope Rhodes is OK, but for now, congrats to Big Show.
Kelly Kelly/Maria Menounos vs Eve/Beth Phoenix (C-)
4 of 8I have to say that the Divas match was better than I had hoped for, especially given that Maria Menounos had a well-documented injury to her ribs.
She actually got in more ring time than I expected her to, but the E! host was clearly in pain before and after the match, as you could see her grimacing and she was not the energetic fireball we remember from her last win over Phoenix.
Kelly pulled out a few nice moves during the match, and the whole thing lasted longer than the last month of Raw Divas matches combined.
Kharma did not make an appearance, which saddened me, but I was pleased with the outcome and think WWE did right by including the Divas rather than overlooking them like I had thought they would.
Not the best match ever, but a step in the right direction.
Undertaker vs Triple H (A+)
5 of 8This match stole the show for me, hands down. When this feud first began a few months ago I was adamantly opposed to seeing Taker and Triple H do a third match at Mania.
Now that they have, I am glad no one listened to me. The match will be talked about more for its storytelling than any other match from last night.
The whole thing was done to perfection and Shawn Michaels played his part well.
When the final bell rang and Taker was once again victorious, I was not sure how the post-match events would play out. Would someone attack someone else? Would HBK turn on Hunter?
What happened was a wonderful show of respect from all three men, as they embraced and helped each other to the back.
I could not imagine a better ending to the match. If Triple H or Taker had been retiring after that match, it would have been an amazing way to go out.
Had it not been for the Rock's surprising victory over Cena, I think this would have been the most talked-about match.
Team Johnny vs Team Teddy (C-)
6 of 8Just knowing that WWE took the Money in the Bank match out of WrestleMania for this makes me very upset.
This match did nothing more than give a dozen superstars a short spotlight, which I am sure they appreciate given it was the biggest night of the year, but the main focus of the match was on the people outside the ring.
Teddy Long lost control of SmackDown, like we all knew he would, and now Johnny Ace is in charge of both shows.
While I expected this to happen, I also expected this match to be better. It had a few nice spots, but the whole thing felt jumbled and poorly planned.
12 men on the ring apron just makes for too much going on. This could have been a four-on-four tag match and been way better.
Now that it is over, I hope a lot of these guys can move on to other things.
CM Punk vs Chris Jericho (A)
7 of 8CM Punk and Chris Jericho probably would have had a match which would have been more memorable had we not had Rock/Cena and Undertaker/Triple H to deal with.
The WWE Championship match was no less entertaining to me personally, as these two amazing in-ring performers did everything they could to steal the show.
With high spots for both men being a few of the highlights, the thing I enjoyed the most was the consistent storytelling in the match.
Punk and Jericho made sure that you knew why they were feuding if you didn't before the night. The trash talk, the close-call DQ's and the constant reversals all made the match more exciting.
Having Jericho put Punk over the way he did will hopefully push Punk up to the next level of superstardom. Tonight on Raw, we will find out if they will keep feuding or if this is the end for them.
The Rock vs John Cena (A)
8 of 8The two men who were supposed to have the biggest match in WWE history certainly gave it their all last night. Their match was just barely overshadowed by Triple H and Undertaker in terms of excitement, but not in terms of surprises.
While I fully expected the Rock to put Cena over, the match ended with Rocky's hand held high and Cena left sitting on the ramp wondering what had just happened.
In a moment of ego when Cena tried to pull of a People's Elbow, The Rock came back to his feet and delivered one more Rock Bottom to seal Cena's fate.
What's next for Cena is anyone's guess, but I still do not see him turning heel anytime soon. I will be re-watching this match because I had to report on the event live, but I think it was tied with Jericho/Punk for second-best match of the night.
Thanks for reading, and if you would have graded the matches any differently, please feel free to share your thoughts below.
