WrestleMania 28 Results: Undertaker Must Retire Following Epic Win vs. Triple H

Adam WellsApr 2, 2012

In the least surprising result at WrestleMania 28, The Undertaker outlasted Triple H in another classic match inside Hell In a Cell.

With The Streak reaching 20-0, it is time for the dead man to call it a career.

You could see some not-so-subtle hints that WWE is treating this match as if it could be the final one for both Undertaker and Triple H. Until we get a definitive word, the rumors will always be out there.

But the decision should be an easy one considering the standards that have been set for Undertaker and The Streak over the last four years.

There was a time when Undertaker's matches at WrestleMania were nothing more than filler, a way to get him on the show and keep the fans interested in his run of success. He was always doing battle with the likes of Kane and Mark Henry.

All of that changed six years ago with Undertaker's match against Batista, and it was pushed into the stratosphere after his first bout with Shawn Michaels.

Now, when fans see Undertaker's name on the WrestleMania card, they are expecting to see the best match of the show, and one of the best matches of the year.

Certainly, this match with Triple H delivered that and then some. The problem is figuring out where he could possibly go next, and how it would measure up to what we have seen the last four years.

Even if a big-name opponent, like Brock Lesnar, were to take the spot occupied by Michaels and Triple H since 2009, is there any way that it would be close to the level of these past matches?

Lesnar isn't going to do the kinds of things to his body that Michaels or Triple H have done, nor does he have the storytelling acumen to make it feel like we are seeing something special.

The Streak has taken on a life of its own in WWE, but we have to see it handled in a way that it is able to match the standards we have for it. Right now, that match doesn't appear to be out there.

Rather than have WWE hang on to it just to keep it around, Undertaker should walk away after having one of the best matches in his career.
