WrestleMania 28 Match: Why It Makes Perfect Sense for Cena to Beat the Rock

Alex HallApr 1, 2012

The Rock vs. John Cena has been the known headline match for WrestleMania 28 since the night after last year's 'Mania, and the outcome of this hyped bout should be obvious to see.

While many older WWE fans are happy to see The Rock back on Monday Night Raw as well as his return to in-ring action a few months ago, he can't just come back and defeat the face of the company.

While obviously the dialogue between Rock and Cena during their arguments every week is scripted, some of what Cena has been saying alludes to why it makes sense business-wise to have the Massachusetts-native win.

Cena is a day in and day out competitor, he's at almost every live event, every Raw, he's the WWEs flag bearer.

The Rock was that guy at one point in time, but left to pursue a career of action and family movies in Hollywood. He can't just sign on the dotted line for one year and tear down everything Cena has done since Rock's departure.

During and continuing past Cena's rise to the promised land, he's taken down the biggest young stars and yesteryear's legends. He's defeated Kurt Angle, Wade Barrett, Big Show, JBL—all of them. All in an attempt to make his character likable to audiences past the age of 14.

That strategy has had almost the exact opposite effect on the WWE Universe however, though I'm not sure that the company minds having this 50/50 split reaction to their main superstar every time his music hits.

The Rock's defeat will signify a true passing of the torch from the the elder generation to the new one, just like Hulk Hogan's defeat to Rocky did all those years ago.

On that same note, seeing Cena defeat their hero will drive the elder fans into a greater hating of his character, while the younger ones will eat up the victory.

Often times, wrestling storylines are just new twists on ones from the past, and Rock versus Cena is just a new adaptation of Hogan's loss to Rock or Ric Flair's defeat at the hands of Bret Hart.

As much as Rocky says that he's "never leaving" the company again, he's not returning full-time to the ring. The WWE needs to build the stock of the guy who is there every day, every night for them instead of building the legend a superstar who already has his place in history.
